Yes, this is true of contemporary works. Even the more technical stuff like
the WBC series and the NIGTC series rarely get down to discussing syntax.
When Westminster Seminary Book Store had a half off special a year ago on
the NIGTC series I picked up a bunch of them. Now that I have had a chance
to use some of these books it seems that the difference between the NIGTC
and the NICNT and the Pillar series (all from Eerdmans) isn't all that
great. These works are all worth consulting and generally the scholarship
is at quite a high level of excellence but don't expect them to explain the
Greek syntax very often. They don't.
Some of the works published between the mid 19th and early 20th century
provide more information on Greek syntax. Authors like Sandy and Hedlam
(Romans ICC), H. B. Swete (Mark), H.A.W. Meyer and even some really old
stuff like John Eadie (Colossians & Ephesians) and Henry Alford. All of
these authors are occasionally helpful on questions of syntax. These works
are of course "out of date" which is less of a problem to people who have
rejected the "*myth of progress."
On the subject of using commentaries for translation work, I know one or two
professional translators who work for the various bible societies and let me
assure you that they DO use commentaries.
