What some call "conative" imperfect others call "tendential." There would
have to be evidence in the context that the action indicated (or in this
case not done) was attempted unsuccessfully. This use with the negative
would be defficult to comprehend. "They were not attempting to know."
There is nothing in the context or the meaning of the verb that would allow
this. EGINWSKON in this sentence is the most common use of the imperfect,
descriptive. You get a picture in your mind of the disciples standing
around with a blank stare.

The first KAI seems to me to be adversative. Jesus tells them something
they should have understood and accepted but they did not. Hence, I would
translate the KAI's But . . ., and . . . . . and. . . ." or for the second
one just put a comma.
