ARNION is a diminutive of ARHN (more used is AMNON). The latter is a lamb or
young sheep as a rule of one year old (Ex.29:38), (Lev.9:3; 12:6; 23:19),
(Num.6:12,14; 7:15,17,21,23,27,29,33,35,39,41,45,47,51,53,57, 59,63,65,
69,71,75,77,81,83,87,88; 28:3,9,11,19,27; 29:2,13,17,20,23,26,29,33),
(Ezek.46:13) and also (1Sam.7:9) versus (Ex.12:5), (Lev.23:12; 22:27).
That is indeed ARNION is rather a young or very young sheep.
PROBATON is livestock on the whole; later it is an adult sheep or a sheep of
any age old.
BOSKW is correct, IMO, when a flock (or may be its part) feeds (as if) of
itself, (as if) without shepherd's tending. It occurs when:
1) Shepherd is apparently absent: (Gen.41:2); (Is.5:17; 11:7; 27:10; 30:23;
32:14; 65:25); (Mt.8:30); (Mk.5:11).
2) Shepherd is present but he is thoughtless, careless, negligent; or may be
he endeavors but can not grasp properly all the flock; or he more concerns
about his own interests and problems: (Gen.37:12, 16 in context of 37:26);
(Ezec.34:2-3,8,10b); (Mk.5:14 in context of 5:11,13); (Lk.8:32; 15:15 in
context of 15:13,16).
3) Shepherd is not needful, or his tending is not in evidence or not
appreciable; it may be when there is so much attractive feed just under
one's feet and everywhere that it's not needed to go (or to be tended)
anywhere: (Gen.29:7,9 - it's, IMO, fertile land of Mesopota'mia: Gen.28:2);
(Ezek.34:13-16).
POIMAINW is correct, IMO, when at deficiency of feed a shepherd mindfully
and persistently devotes oneself to removing this problem; so he is rather
far-sighted and every time prudently shepherds his flock towards a better,
to more rich, broad and peaceful pastures:
(Gen.30:31,36 in context of 30:29-30); (Gen.37:2 in context of 37:2b);
(Gen.37:13 in context of anxiety about proper pasturing); (Ex.3:1a in
context of 3:1b); (1Sam.16:11; David is apparently a good shepherd, because
Jesse with his sons left him all the sheep); (1Sam.17:15,34-35; there is the
same David); (1Sam.25:16); (2 Sam.5:2; 7:7); (1Chron.11:2; 17:6); (Ps.28:9;
49:14 - it is to be persistent in tending as well but relentlessly, with
strong fatal intent that is opposite to good keeping); (Ps.78:71-72); (Song
1:7-8) as well as 2:16; 6:2,3 -- inspired AGAPAW of love between man and
woman confirms in attentive keeping their mutual devotion); (Is.40:11; 61:5
in context of gaining a foothold 61:3-4); (Jer.3:15; 6:3; 23:2,4);
(Ezek.34:10a - the Lord will debar them from feeding the sheep, even if they
see reason and cease setting their own interests above sheep's ones);
(Ezek.34:23. What has changed since 34:13-16 where was BOSKW? IMO,
exclusively God's feeding the sheep is not so evident as feeding the same
sheep (on the same land) by great king David. And indeed, with God's grace
upon the self-supporting sheep it may seem that the sheep lives and prospers
itself, without shepherd.); (Mic.5:4(3),6(5); 7:14); (Zech.11:4,7,9);
(Lk.17:7, especially in context of 17:10); (Acts 20:28); (1Pet.5:2-3);
(1Cor.9:6-7); (Rev.2:26-27; 7:17; 12:5; 19:15).
