I used to feel the same way about Latin- it's a dead language; no one speaks
it anymore....that is until my graduation from Yale College. One of the
professors gave an address in Latin, complete with jokes, that many others
laughed at and obviously understood. I will say, that after 4 years of Latin
at Loomis- Chaffee School (my high school), and a course at Yale on the
poetry of Catullus, I still didn't understand much of the speech, nor any of
the jokes! But there are some for whom Latin was, and is, a spoken language.
I do understand and speak 7 (modern) languages, including modern Greek. I
do agree with most of Mr. Miller's remarks on the components of language
learning.
