Telling my wife about this thing at the supper table last night, I
suddenly realized that the mysterious dot under the alpha is probably
a thousands multiplier, and the funny pi is probably a sampi. Taking
the string as a number yields 1979, so it's probably a date.
There were several reasons I dismissed my initial idea that the
string was a date, but now I think that's the most likely explanation.
I suppose it would be obvious to a person with experience in these
things.
I had assumed that the icon was medieval, like so many others in our
collection, but the fact that it hangs in an office space rather than
in one of the galleries would seem consistent with its being a less
valuable piece, if I may assume that modern artists continue to
produce icons in a medieval style. I'll try to get my facts straight
today, but I will not trouble the list. One reason I have troubled the
list with this note is in hopes that it will provoke an explanatory
response from someone more familiar with these things than I.
