Mk 4.3-4: AKOUETE. IDOU EXHLQEN O SPEIRWN SPEIRAI.
KAI EGENETO EN TW SPEIREIN O MEN EPESEN PARA THN ODON, KAI HLQEN TA PETEINA
KAI KATEFAGEN AUTO.

George has already Moon's first question. My following comments do not
address any of the questions raised by Moon.

Reading this verse, the construction KAI EGENETO EN TW SPEIREIN struck me as
sounding very LXX so I did a little looking into it.

Searching for: GINOMAI + EN + (art?) + infinitive, resulted in over 40
*hits in the LXX. I suspected that this was a Hebraism so I opened the
MT/LXX database to see what the LXX was translating. My guess was correct.
The MT typically had the pattern: W+YHY+B+infin.cstr. In one or two places
YHY was replaced by HYH (1Samuel 16:23, 2Samuel 15:5) and in a few places B
was replaced with K (2Kings 2:9). These variations are not terribly
significant.

N.Turner (Syntax pp.. 144-145) notes that this pattern is found most often
in the GNT in Luke. My search found only one in Mark and the rest in Luke
(Mk 4:4 , Lk 5:12 , 9:18 , 9:29 , 9:33 , 11:1 , 14:1 , 17:11 , 17:14 ,
19:15, 24:4 , 24:15 , 24:30 , 24:51). Turner focuses his discussion on EN +
(art?) + infinitive used as a temporal expression. This construction is
found something like 500 times in the LXX. Turner's statistics for this
construction includes Xenophon 16, Thucydides 6, Plato 6, and a doubtful one
in Soph. Ajax line 554. Turner does not give any statistics from
non-biblical sources for the full KAI EGENETO . . . form.

Anyway, Mk 4:4 is a one time use of the full pattern W+YHY+B+infin.cstr.
rendered most often in the LXX as KAI EGENETO EN TW + infin.. Luke uses
this a lot.

greetings,

Clay
