DMX Direct Mail Express-PEL Program

The Industry

Since 1983 the number of Americans who shop by mail has risen 77 %. That means 101 million, or about 55 % of the adult population. With the advent of superstores, buying by computer, and by phone, retail shopping has decreased. The direct marketing has been around a long time. Once disparagingly called "junk mail," direct marketing is changing its tune. Due to the advent of computers that can track demographics and create specialized mailing lists, businesses can target particular markets with precision. This means an end to sending out vast quantities of mail to reach the ideal consumer, allowing smaller businesses with limited advertising budgets to utilize this highly effective way of selling.

The Company

Direct Mail Express (DMX) is a full service mailing house located on the Berkeley/Oakland border. DMX recently changed its name from General Marketing Service(GMS) to better reflect the services we offer. We specialize in working with small and large businesses sending out small to medium targeted mailers. Businesses served, range from retailer and wholesaler to public relations firms and publishers: The International House at U.C. Berkeley, Age Wave, Elmwood Realty, Gaia Bookstore, Gathering Tribes Gallery, Outback, San Francisco Review of Books and Ronin Publications are just some of our clients. We can take our client's idea, from a handwritten sketch and design, print, and mail the piece. We offer list acquisition and management as well as the mail preparation (first class, second class, bulk, and UPS). We recently began doing order fulfillment for a select group of clients. I have over eight years of direct mail experience, first working with a non profit organization and more recently starting my own business. DMX has grown from a one-person business in my basement to operating out of a 1000 square foot. space, employing two full time employees, one part-time employee and several outside contractors, when needed. The business is growing rapidly and while that offers many benefits, it also has led to some problems. The organization that worked for a one-person operation is inadequate for the growing company. I have started to delegate supervision of the production end and am training one commissioned sales person. That is not enough, however. I need assistance in administration, organization, supervision, sales, and marketing to insure that the quality is maintained as the volume of business continues to increase.
