With the recent baseball strike the Darkside saw a great opportunity to market ultimate. With no baseball, the market for baseball cards is depressed and that leaves collectors with money to spend. So, we decided to make Darkside trading cards (we're still working on mass marketing though). One individual was so excited about the idea that she made her own card (card 79). It's as much an individual as she is, so it deserves separate packaging. In addition, we've put together a set of cards and are including them as our bid to Fools (complete with bubble gum - no extra charge). Through these cards you can find out about some of the players who make up Darkside, what our practice field is like, and capture highlights from past tournaments with our commemorative cards.
Although the Darkside has only existed for a year and a half, we're already developing traditions (going to Fools?), forming relationships (the players featured on cards 49 & 50 are a good example) , and having reunions with former players (one alum, now in Utah promised to fly in for Fools). We've also had the pleasure of watching ourselves improve as a team and individually. Last year's rookies are this year's leaders, and last year's crushing defeats are this year's narrow losses. And, a few teams have learned that it's no longer wise to scrimmage Darkside "to get a win under the belt". We've gone from a team trying to figure out how to read the pool play chart at tournaments to one which really contributes to the Ultimate community in the Triangle. See the Triangle ultimate stuff for an example. But along the way our love for the game that features incredible athleticism and the players' common respect for one another has only grown. This year we'd like to win a few games at Fools but mostly we just want to get to be a part of the most spirited tournament we know of.
We hope you'll like the cards and that next year we'll be able to add an 18th Annual Fools Commemorative card to the pack.
