The Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association (MOFGA) is a nonprofit membership organization with nearly 3,000 members and subscribers. We run the largest organic event in the country, the Common Ground Country Fair, the third weekend following Labor Day each year. (More than 50,000 people attended in '97.)

For 20 years we've run an apprenticeship program, helping young people (and others) learn how to raise food organically. MOFGA certified 172 farms in '97 -- 2 percent of all the farms in Maine, and more than 4 percent of the dairy farms. We provide technical assistance through Eric Sideman, our Director of Technical Services, and marketing assistance through staff. Educational events include Farmer-to-Farmer conference (Nov. 1-2, 1997) and an Agricultural Trade Show (early January).
