A Note on Sources

A. GENERAL DISCUSSION

The key sources used by the author and the Naval History Division in the preparation and checking of this book were the action reports, war diaries, and other official records submitted by PT units and personnel, together with certain captured German and Japanese records. This material is in the possession of the Naval History Division and is listed in detail in Part B of this note.

In addition to these primary materials, various secondary sources have been used either in the original preparation of the manuscript or in the revisions that were made in 1962. The most important of these books are described below. The author also relied to some extent on correspondence and personal conversations with many of the participants in the actions, particularly for background details not available in the official reports.

For the general course of the war, the indispensable source is Samuel E. Morison's 15-volume History of United States Naval Operations in World War II (Boston: Little Brown and Co., 1946-61). In addition, the Navy Department publication United States Naval Chronology, World War II (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1955) is of great value.

Relatively few books have been written exclusively on PT boat operations and of those that have appeared few have historical merit. Probably the best books have been written on the loss of President Kennedy's PT-109, including Robert Dono's van's carefully researched PT-109 (New York: McGraw Hill, 1961), Chandler Whipple's Lt. John F. Kennedy -- Expendable (New York: Universal Publishing Corp., 1962), and Richard Tregaskis John F. Kennedy: War Hero (New York: Dell Publishing Co., 1962). This incident was also the subject of an excellent article by John Hersey, "Survival", in the New Yorker of 17 June 1944. Edward I. Farley's PT Patrol (New York: Exposition Press, 1957) is a colorful book primarily relating the author's own experience as a PT boat officer in the Pacific. W. L. White's They Were Expendable (New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1942) is an overdramatic account of the first Philippine campaign, but one which is still of limited use. An excellent account of British PT operations is contained in Peter Scott The Battle of the Narrow Seas (London: Country Life Limited, 1945). The British boats often operated in conjunction with our PT's.

For the technical development of the PT boat, the best source is an unpublished manuscript in the possession of the Naval History Division, An Administrative History of PT's in World War II, prepared by Frank A. Tredinnick, Jr., and Harrison L. Bennett . This manuscript also provides valuable data on the training of PT boat personnel and other administrative matters. Two articles by S. A. Peters, who was personally involved in PT design matters, are also of great value in tracing the technical development of the boats: "The PT Boat" (Bureau of Ships Journal, August 1953,

--520--

pp. 2-8) and "The Motor Torpedo Boat" (Ordnance, May-June 1954, pp. 943-946).There are two basic sources listing Japanese ship losses due to U.S. action: Joint Army-Navy Assessment Committee, Japanese Naval and Merchant Shipping Losses During World War II by All Causes (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1947); and General Headquarters, Far East Command, The Imperial Japanese Navy in World War II (Tokyo: Far East Command, 1952). An official publication of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, German, Japanese, and Italian Submarine Losses (Washington: Chief of Naval Operations, 1946) is of value on this subject. Specific claims in all of these sources can be and have been questioned, but together they represent the best information available in print on Axis naval losses.
