COMMUNICATIONS


7000 GENERAL.

  1. Convoys are usually designated by two or three letter symbols which are prefixed to their serial numbers. These symbols indicate the port of departure and destination, and are used for purposes of brevity and convenience.
    1. In employing the convoy symbol the letter designating the point of departure precedes, i.e., a convoy sailing from San Francisco to Pearl Harbor is designated SP, whereas one from Pearl Harbor to San Francisco is designated PS.
    2. Where troop convoys are involved, they shall be designated by the letter "T" in parentheses immediately following the two letter designations.

  1. In the case of a convoy or ship, whose route passes through two or more areas, responsibility is changed from one diverting authority to the other at 1200 GCT of the date on which it is estimated the ship will pass from one area to the other. This date is known as the "CHOP". The CHOP, or CHOPS is the ship passes through more than two areas, is to be indicated in the route signal.
    1. When a diverting authority directs a ship which will subsequently pass through another area, the authority effecting the diversion shall inform the authority into whose area the ship will subsequently pass and will, if necessary, amend the CHOP date.

  1. Communications - In accordance with USF 70 series.
