R-1. CHIEF BOATSWAIN'S MATE

USUAL RATING: CBM DISION: Deck

Routine Duties

Assigns boatswain's mates, coxswains, and seamen to deck details and cleaning and maintenance stations. Directs details in handling of lines, ground tackle, and use of any special rigging required for anchoring, fueling, towing, mooring, taking on supplies, and similar operations. Inspects lines and wire ropes in use, blocks, davits, windlass, capstan, winches, etc., and orders cleaning, lubrication, repairs, or replacements as necessary, supervising and instructing in preparation of replacement lines, splicing, fitting clips and shackles, and other marlinspike seamanship. Periodically inspects ship for general cleanliness and condition of all compartments and voids, checking hatches, ports, and doors for watertight integrity, and ordering repair or replacement of dogs, gaskets, and other fittings as necessary. Directs preparation and painting of hull, decks, and bulkheads. Supervises training program for boatswain's mates and deck force seamen, helping. men to prepare for advancement in rating and passing judgment on their practical factors qualifications. Keeps anchor log and inventory of all boatswain's gear, including cleaning equipment and supplies. Assists first lieutenant in preparation of job orders and requisitions for boatswain's stores and supervises their procurement and stowage.

Routine Duties

Takes charge of division at special sea detail and when fueling, towing, taking on supplies, and performing similar operations. Sees that men are properly stationed and that lines are smartly handled. Supervises section leaders in charge of deck details and working parties in preparation of surfaces and painting, in cleaning of crew's messing and berthing compartments, in repair. maintenance, and replacement of ground tackle, lines, wire rope, life lines, and other marlinspike seamanship, and in lubrication and maintenance of blocks, davits, windlass, capstan, and winches. Supervises lowering and hoisting of motor whaleboat and operation of other hoisting tackle. Inspects life rafts. motor whaleboat, and gear lockers for proper stowage and cleanliness. Inspects assigned section of ship for need of: repair or replacement of dogs, gaskets, knife-edges or other watertight fittings on doors, hatches, and ports and informs chief boatswains mate. Pipes reveille, chow, turn-to; and other routine calls, using boatswain's pipe. and passes word over MC as directed by OOD. Serves as master-at-arms, maintaining- order and discipline among crew.

Routine Duties

Directs and assists work detail of several men in sweeping and swabbing down or scraping, chipping, and painting of assigned area of ship topside, or such compartments as vent fan rooms, crew's heads, chain locker, windlass room, and passageways. Performs a variety of tasks in connection with stowage, cleaning, repair, and replacement of ground tackle, anchor chains, lines, hoisting tackle, hawsers, fenders, and other deck gear. Takes assigned station at special sea detail, fueling at sea, and other special bills, handling, passing, and securing lines and other gear as ordered. When motor whaleboat is called away, takes station and supervises and assists boat crew in lowering and hoisting boat in response to orders of boatswain's mate in charge of deck crew. When boat is waterborne, takes helm and carries out orders of OOD, giving orders to boat engineer and bow hook as necessary. Records compass courses to usual destinations in order to assure safe travel and return in fog or at night.

Routine Duties

Performs routine carpentry, such as making file boxes, galley paddles, and stowage crates. Repairs wooden parts of small boats, such as planking, rudder, and tiller. Assists shipfitter and metalsmith with fabricating and repairing metalwork. With assistance of strikers and shipfitters, sounds peak tanks and voids to determine whether water or oil seepage exists and turns in daily soundings report to OOD and first lieutenant. Takes and logs draft of vessel before and after fueling and taking on gores or ammunition and upon entering or leaving port. Inspects CO2 fire extinguishers weekly, cleaning and refilling them when necessary. Inspects, checks, and installs rubber gaskets on watertight doors, hatches, and fittings to preserve watertight integrity of ship.

Routine Duties

Collects mail from mail boxes daily and delivers it to censoring officer, picking it up after it has been censored and sorting and/or stowing it in post office. Before entering port, secures post office and completes sorting of mail, stowing and locking it in canvas mail pouches. When anchor detail is set, stands by with working party at boat assigned to dispatch mail to Fleet Post Office. Takes outgoing- mail to Fleet Post Office, obtaining official signature for registered mail and mail log Presents identification card and authorization card to Fleet Post Office to receive mail for own ship. Upon return to ship, delivers all registered mail to communications office and sorts and distributes regular mail. Keeps card index record of all personnel attached to and transferred from ship. Readdresses mail to be forwarded. In case of personnel lost or missing, forwards properly cancelled mail to Fleet Records Office. Takes charge of $400 postal fund, purchasing stamps for resale to ship's personnel and maintaining accounting records.

Routine Duties

Is on bridge or immediately available to bridge from morning twilight until after 2000 report, assisting navigator by timing rounds of sights at dawn, midmorning, noon, afternoon (when required), and at evening twilight. Compares his computations with navigator's as a check for accuracy. Resolves observations to a plotted position on plotting sheet. Logs 0800, 1200, and 2000 positions both in quartermaster's notebook and on form NBS-1111, which is delivered to Captain. Sets up DRT and labels first point with DR latitude and longitude taken from plot on navigation bridge. Works problems with maneuvering board as required. Computes time to LAN. Plots noon running fix. Changes charts as progress of course line requires. Assists signalmen when volume of incoming or outgoing visual signals traffic requires it. Personally maintains and cares for sextants, alidades, and peloruses, cleaning with cotton or comparable materials and lubricating with fine oil. Personally makes corrections to charts, following data from Notice to Mariners and confidential information. May make weather analyses from synoptic weather reports. Personally cares for, winds, and checks rate on chronometers.

Records all changes of course and speed and times thereof. Records readings of pit log and weather information hourly. Passes word to electrician's mate in IC concerning readings of thermometers and barometers and an estimate of wind direction, so that corrections may be made to speed, course, and position of ship. Compares corrected gyro readings with magnetic readings to set up Napier diagram or deviation table for magnetic compass. Records corrections and differences in compass log or check hook. Assists navigator by timing his sights and furnishes proper watch error by comparing watch with GCT chronometer. Calculates time of sunrise, sunset, and time to LAN. May plot DR and carry course line under close supervision of navigator or leading quartermaster. Corrects Light Lists, Coast Pilots, and Sailing Directions as required. Turns on navigational lights at proper time and sounds alarms as ordered. Routine Duties

Works with communication officer in organizing work of radiomen and in handling communications, supervising performance of operators and radio watch supervisors. Keeps ship's communications publications up-to-date in accordance with instructions and changes received, handles classified matter, and supervises filing of messages and publications. Instructs men in naval communications procedures, in use of International Morse code, in operation of radio receivers, and in techniques of receiving, typing, and breaking down codes. Energizes, tunes, calibrates, and makes other necessary operational adjustments to receivers and transmitters, including radio direction finder, and instructs lower rated men in these duties. Supervises, instructs, and assists as necessary in routine cleaning, checking, testing, and minor maintenance of receivers, transmitters, and antennas, including such types of work as replacing parts and cleaning coils and contacts. If no radio technician is available for radio work, will be required to perform all technical maintenance and repairs, keep maintenance and repair logs and equipment files, prepare lists of spare parts, tools. and needed, and make work lists for repairs and maintenance to be done in port.

RESPONSIBILITES

Responsible for organizing and supervising work of radio operating personnel and for training men in radio communication procedures, operating techniques, and routine maintenance of equipment.

Routine Duties

Directs work of other radio technician (s) in routine testing, checking, and repairing of radio, radar, and sonar equipment, and may supervise cleaning and routine maintenance performed by radiomen, radarmen, and sonarmen. Confers with officer or officers concerned to coordinate equipment maintenance program with ship's operating schedule, and plans work and assigns men accordingly. Visually checks various meter logs and observes equipment in operation to detect and correct potential failures. Diagnoses equipment failures, using electrical and electronic testing instruments, and consults complex schematic drawings and wiring diagrams to trace circuits and isolate casualty. Personally performs more complex repairs and supervises other radio technician(s) in less complicated repairs. Supervises and performs more complex work in modification or installation of electronic equipment when done by ship's personnel. Instructs and gives technical advice to radiomen, radarmen, and sonarmen in correct procedures for testing, checking, and performing routine maintenance tasks. May assist in or direct the making of complex electronic repairs to sonar equipment when they are beyond the comprehension of sonar materiel man. Supervises keeping of various equipment operation and materiel logs and equipment history indexes, and preparation of failure reports, job orders, and equipment and spare parts requisitions.
