Transportation and Travel

Travel is of two kinds; and this voyage of mine across the ocean combined both. 'Out of my country and myself I go,' sings the old poet: and I was not only travelling out of my country in latitude and longitude, but out of myself in diet, associates, and consideration. Part of the interest and a great deal of the amusement flowed, at least to me, from this novel situation in the world.

Robert Louis Stevenson, 1850-1894
Essays of Travel from The Gutenberg Project.

Norfolk & Southern Railway Company Historical Society

Norfolk & Southern Railway Company Historical Society

This society is for the original Norfolk & Southern Railway that ran from Norfolk, VA to Charlotte, NC with various branches (Aberdeen, Asheboro, Beaufort, Belhaven, Carthage, Columbia, Durham, Ellerbe, Fayetteville, Goldsboro (A&EC), Jackson Springs, Lee Creek, Oriental, Snow Hill (A&EC), Suffolk and Virginia Beach, VA).

Degree Confluence Project

Degree Confluence Project

The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. The pictures, and stories about the visits, will then be posted. There is a confluence within 49 miles (79 km) of you if you're on the surface of Earth. We've discounted confluences in the oceans and some near the poles, but there are still 11,583 to be found.

VolunteerTibet.org

Volunteer Tibet

VolunteerTibet is a volunteer service that is dedicated to serving the needs of the Tibetan community of Dharamsala, India. We started with a simple goal - "To help Tibetan organizations connect with volunteers and to foster a meaningful cultural exchange. To empower these organizations while helping potential volunteers find ways to give of themselves." VolunteerTibet officially launched on December 10th, 2002, commemorating the day His Holiness the Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize.

GRASS GIS

GRASS GIS

Geographic Resources Analysis Support System, commonly referred to as GRASS GIS, is a Geographic Information System (GIS) used for data management, image processing, graphics production, spatial modelling, and visualization of many types of data. It is Free (Libre) Software/Open Source released under GNU General Public License (GPL).

Originally developed by the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (USA-CERL, 1982-1995), a branch of the US Army Corp of Engineers, as a tool for land management and environmental planning by the military, GRASS has evolved into a powerful utility with a wide range of applications in many different areas of scientific research. GRASS is currently used in academic and commercial settings around the world, as well as many governmental agencies including NASA, NOAA, USDA, DLR, CSIRO, the National Park Service, the U.S. Census Bureau, USGS, and many environmental consulting companies.

San Pedro de Atacamax

San Pedro de Atacamax

"Twenty-two students from two universities, on two continents, speaking two languages gathered for 10 days in the Atacama desert of northern Chile in July, 2001, to push the limits of documentary multimedia storytelling. Under the guidance of Professor Rich Beckman from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Professor Cristobal Edwards from the School of Journalism at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, student journalists, equipped with the latest digital video and still cameras, digital audio recorders and laptop computers produced this Web site."

"We came to the desert to whet the appetite of our students, to build cultural bridges and to tell stories. We came to field test classroom skills and new technologies. We came to grow, to learn and to share. Storytelling is an ancient art that preserves the memories of changing cultures and promotes understanding. We brought new tools to an ancient land. And although our tools will continue to change, we hope that our stories will live on."

Virtual AGC and AGS

Virtual AGC and AGS

The purpose of this project is to provide an emulation of the onboard Apollo guidance computers, along with some ancillary items needed to make the emulation do something interesting. "Interesting" is, of course, a subjective notion, and there are plenty of additional components one might want to add to the simulation to make it more interesting.
