Gamelan Nyai Saraswati - instrumental ensemble of Javanese gamelan
Gamelan Nyai Saraswati
Gamelan Nyai Saraswati arrived in Chapel Hill from Central Java in December of 2000. Wrapped in Indonesian newspapers, clove cigarette packing boxes, plastic "raffia" twine, and blackened by three months at sea, a small group of devoted polishers met on a daily basis in January of 2001 to polish and prepare for playing the nearly 70 bronze instruments which comprise Gamelan Nyai Saraswati.

The instruments of a Central Javanese gamelan are conceived as an ensemble and then forged, cast, and tuned in the workshop of one gong maker. The ensemble was cast and forged nearly 20 years ago, long enough for the bronze to stop "shifting" which means that the tuning has settled. The ensemble's tuning has the highly valued and much sought quality referred to as "manis" or "sweet" in the Javanese language.

Oxford Orphanage - history and imagery of the Oxford Orphanage
orphanage kitchen
In December of 1872, John H. Mills suggested that St. John's College, a former Masonic college, be made into an asylum for the protection, training and education of indigent orphan children. The institution admitted 136 children the first year, with 109 remaining at the year's close. The Grand Lodge raised its donation to $1,000 the second year.

On a cold, bleak Saturday afternoon in February 1873, Robert L. and Nancy Parrish and Isabelle Robertson, who all lived in Granville County, were received into the home. Past Grand Master Francis D. Winston recalled the scene: "I was a student at Oxford in the Horner [Military Academy] and saw [Mills] receive the first orphan at this institution. I shall not forget the scene. I had gone there to carry a bundle of clothing collected from my fellow students. It was on Saturday afternoon. A dull cloud hung in the sky. A man with a one-horse wagon drove to the door. Mr. Mills, with gruff voice, asked his mission. He told it. The gigantic form of our friend shook with emotion. He lifted the pale youth from the wagon with the paw of a lion. He raised him in the air, and with melting pity and tears, let him drop upon his heart and kissed him. It was indeed the caress of the lion, but it was truly the caress of love."

SouthNow - Southern Politics, Media and Public Life
SouthNow, the flagship publication of the Program on Southern Politics, Media and Public Life, packages commentary and analysis of trends and issues common throughout the region and provides insight into Southern politics on the state and national level.

SouthNow is connecting the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to Southern leadership through its research brokerage, and by providing a patch of common ground on which civic, business, journalistic and political leaders from diverse backgrounds can exchange ideas about their common challenges.

Roger McGuinn's Folk Den
The purpose of this page is to use the medium of the World Wide Web to continue the tradition of the folk process, that is the telling of stories, and singing of songs, passed on from one generation to another by word of mouth.

In this electronic era, such a process is in danger of being overwhelmed by the commercial mass media. This page and others on the 'net are working to preserve the folk songs that have chronicled our global heritage for centuries. In the Folk Den there will be a "new" folk song uploaded every month as a "Global Community Service."
