Curriculum

UMD's -ISM(N.) course was offered through the Comparative Literature department at the university. It was titled, "Expressions of Diversity and Community Through Video".

The course was designed to introduce students to the intersections of video making, community building and diversity. It provided an analysis of the concept of community and diversity related to race, gender, sexual orientation, class, religion, disability, national origin and age through experiential workshops, discussions, and hands-on tools, reports, videos and documentaries. The course also focused on how students can be effective member of a diverse group or a community. A variety of community building skills were taught, such as cross-cultural communication, conflict management, ally building and shared leadership and decision making.

The course was a forum for discussion of the concepts of diversity in relation to aspects of the video documentary process: technique, aesthetics, theory, economics, and social and political issues. A primary goal was to de-mystify the production of video, film, and television and to empower students to produce their own unique vision of diversity and community.

Community Educational Activity

The University of Maryland at College Park plans to develop a multicultural, multi-racial, and multi-generational planning committee of local community leaders and university representatives. This committee will work to implement a community forum in Lakeland tentatively entitled: "Race Relations: An Action Plan". This forum, open to both the university and Lakeland community will draw upon the resources in the area to explore identified community needs from a community building, solution oriented perspective. In addition, the forum will allow an opportunity to showcase and discuss the videos produced as part of the Spring 1996 -ISM (N.) course at the University of Maryland. Student producers of -ISM (N.) videos will address the diversity issues, conflicts, and community issues which arose in connection with the creation, production, and consumption of the videos in discussions with students at local schools and community centers.
