PROF. LEONARD COLE: [AUTHOR OF "CLOUDS OF SECRECY"]:
I know you're going to get to the Minneapolis story, but just in the
past couple of months, I got ahold of a report that is even MORE
astounding, in some ways, in terms of the expansiveness of the
testing. There is something called "large area coverage" ....

And I might tell you that tomorrow there are going to be hearings in
Washington. Congressman [John] Conyers is holding hearings in his
subcommittee on Legislation and National Security on this very
issue. I'm going to be testifying tomorrow in Washington, and there
are going to be some other people who are going to be there who are
family members -- that is, children of people who died as a result
of [Government] experiments that were conducted during this Cold War
period. And one of the items that I'm going to refer to in my
testimony tomorrow is a project that was conducted during 1957 and
1958, during which time, a cargo plane took several flights,
criss-crossing the country, spraying zinc cadmium sulfide chemicals.
And as the U.S. Army's report, itself, says,

virtually, the whole country of the United States was covered
with this material.

The plane would take off from the Canadian border, and fly slowly
down to the Gulf of Mexico. These materials would be spread, and
were found to be landing as far away as New York State. So, you know
that, as the air would push the zinc cadmium particles around, most
of the people who were residents of the United States during that
time were inhaling at least some of the zinc cadmium sulfide. And
the cadmium in that compound was clearly known THEN to be toxic,
even in small amounts. So, it is not true that it was being done
for anybody's health.

AMY GOODMAN:
In a few minutes, we'll be talking with one man from Minneapolis who
just learned of the tests [dispersing zinc cadmium sulfide] over his
elementary school [the Clinton Elementary School] in 1953. He always
wondered why he got prostate cancer when he was 20 years old.

We're talking with Leonard Cole, the author of "CLOUDS OF SECRECY:
The Army's Germ Warfare Tests Over Populated Areas".

NARRATOR:
.... the Army conducted secret tests in which they sprayed chemicals
from rooftops and vehicles. The tests took place over several areas
throughout the United States and Canada. Initially, the Army said
that they conducted the tests to determine if chemical smokescreens
could shield American cities in the event of an atomic attack.
Since then, the U.S. Army has admitted that the tests were, in fact,
done to simulate biological and chemical warfare.

**** JASPER -- It looks like school is out. Children are ****
**** riding bicycles; no teachers are at school. ****
**** Only Superintendent Tommy Stokes and a maintenance man ****
**** were on duty Tuesday morning. ****
**** Classes were dismissed for a sceond day here Tuesday ****
**** because of a mysterious illness that struck several ****
**** [JD: not "several," but up to forty] ****
**** fifth- and sixth-grade students last Friday. ****
**** But Jasper school Superintendent Tommy Stokes said he ****
**** sees "good news and bad news" in the situation. ****
**** "We may never find the problem, but I believe it's safe ****
**** to have school now." ****
**** Stokes added that he is prepared to open school ****
**** "whenever they give me a clean bill of health, even ****
**** without the source being found." ****
**** "A decision on holding classes Wednesday is pending on ****
**** samples taken today by the Health Department and its ****
**** recommendation," Stokes said. ****
**** Dr. Sandra Nichols of the Arkansas Department of Health ****
**** said "the community is in no current danger." But since ****
**** the "current investigation is not complete," they agreed ****
**** the school would remain closed Tuesday. ****
**** She announced that the Department of Health continues ****
**** to coordinate a state and local investigation of the ****
**** event, during which thirty to forty children developed ****
**** symptoms, including rashes and respiratory difficulties, ****
**** along with headaches, stomach pain, and nausea. ****
**** "First and foremost, all children who were affected ****
**** Friday are continuing to improve," according to a press ****
**** release from the Arkansas Department of Health. ****
**** "The symptoms have continued to subside." ****
**** "We're still in the investigative stage," Stokes added. ****
**** "The Department of Health, OSHA [U.S. Occupational Safety ****
**** and Health Administration], and the Arkansas Department ****
**** of Pollution Control and Ecology will come back today and ****
**** take more samples." ****
**** Officials already have taken dirt, air, blood, ****
**** clothing, and urine samples, and "came up with nothing," ****
**** Stokes added. ****
**** Also assisting in the investigation are the State Plant ****
**** Board, the State Department of Parks and Tourism, Doctor ****
**** James Justice of Jasper, Newton County Health Officer ****
**** Doctor Nancy Haller, Doctor Barbara Elaine Ash, Doctor Roy ****
**** Lee of Harrison, the staff at Children's Hospital, along ****
**** with other Arkansas specialists. ****
**** Jasper teachers worked on campus Monday, as an ****
**** in-service day, but were not called back today because ****
**** they have nothing to do, Stokes added. ****
**** He noted that Jasper's ballgame against Valley Springs ****
**** will be played tonight at Pioneer Pavilion at NACTC. ****

If we seriously listen to this God within us [conscience, if you will],
we usually find ourselves being urged to take the more difficult path,
the path of more effort rather than less.
.... Each and every one of us, more or less frequently, will hold
back from this work .... Like every one of our ancestors before us,
we are all lazy. So original sin does exist; it is our laziness.
