Factory Hog Resource

HERE ARE THREE GOOD RESOURCES ON FACTORY HOGS AND THE ALTERNATIVES:

BOSS HOG: NORTH CAROLINA'S PORK REVOLUTION
This is a ground-breaking series of investigative articles originally published
by the Raleigh News & Observer in February and March, 1995. They take a hard
look at the environmental, economic and social effects of North Carolina's
factory hog industry. These articles offer excellent documentation of what
happens when livestock production is concentrated in the hands of a few powerful
interests with strong political ties.
Reprints can be ordered by sending a $5 check to: New Media/Boss Hog, P.O. Box
191, Raleigh, N.C. 27602 (make checks payable to New Media; please send a
mailing label for each place you want the reprints sent to -- they do not have
to be gummed labels).

PROFITABILITY OF A SUSTAINABLE HOG AND BEEF FARM IN MINNESOTA

The case study, put together by the Land Stewardship Project and the Minnesota
Department of Agricultue, features an enterprise analysis of a sustainably
managed beef and hog operation in southern Minnesota. Low-cost buildings and
managed pastures are two of the many strategies this farm family uses to contain
costs and insure profits.
