'ON THE FIRST OF JANUARY HOPE WILLBE BORN'

LONDON,31DECEMBER1940

Charles de Gaulle

THE SPEECHES OF GENERAL DE GAULLE p. 44.

This will be the meaning of the Hour of Hope on January 1st. during which time no true Frenchman will be seen out of doors: Our provinces belong to us, our land belongs to us, our men belong to us. Whosoever seizes our provinces, feeds himself on wheat grown on our soil and holds our fellow-countrymen prisoner, that man is our enemy.

France expects nothing from her enemy, save this—that he should go! That he take himself off, defeated! The enemy entered our country by force of arms. The day will come when he will be driven out by force of arms. He laughs longest who laughs last!

That is the message all Frenchmen will convey to the enemy by observing the Hour of Hope.
