Call for White Papers
Workshop on Research Directions for the Next Generation Internet
May 13-14, 1997, Vienna, VA
On October 10, 1996, President Clinton and Vice President Gore announced a
new initiative to develop the Next Generation Internet (NGI). The
initiative is a three-year, $300 million investment that will create the
foundation for the networks of the 21st century. Specifically, the NGI
initiative will: 1) connect 100 or more universities, national
laboratories, and research institutions with high-speed networks that are
100 to 1,000 times faster than today's Internet; 2) invest in research and
development that will enhance the capabilities of the Internet, such as
real-time services; and 3) demonstrate new applications that support
important national goals and missions such as scientific research, national
security, distance education, environmental monitoring, and health care.
The Computing Research Association will convene a two-day meeting of
researchers to discuss the research agenda needed to accomplish these
goals. The workshop will be held on May 13-14, 1997 at the Sheraton
Premiere Hotel at Tyson's Corner, 8661 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, VA.
Attendance will be by invitation; some limited support for travel and
expenses is available for invitees.
The academic, industrial, and government research communities are invited
to submit "White Papers." These papers will not be formally presented at
the workshop, but will provide grist for the working sessions and will be
part of the formal record of the workshop. White Paper topics might include
(but will not be limited to) research issues such as security,
high-performance routing, performance measurement, caching, multicast, or
dependability/reliability.
The deadline for submission of White Papers is Thursday, March 27, 1997.
Papers not exceeding 1,000 words should be submitted in ASCII text to
jean@cra.org. In addition, please provide a cover page with name, title,
affiliation, postal and e-mail addresses, and phone and fax numbers.
Submissions will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of experts. Those
selected to participate will be notified by April 15.
The workshop is sponsored by the Federal Large Scale Networking Working
Group (LSN) of the National Science and Technology Council's Committee on
Computing, Information, and Communications R&D Subcommittee. LSN members
include the National Institutes of Health, National Security Agency,
Department of Energy, National Aeronautics and Space Administration,
Department of Defense, DARPA, National Coordinating Office, National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, White House Office of Science and
Technology Policy, Federal Networking Council, and National Science
Foundation.
