Listserv - E-mail Conferencing
What it does:
- sends mail to a list of subscribers
- allows subscribers to add and delete themselves (optional)
- keeps an archive of list messages (optional)
- creates a digest of list messages (optional)
- keeps a collections of related files (optional)
- may be "moderated"
- may have restricted access
Why use listserv
- time-shifting for all
- time for reflection and research
- difference in personality of respondents from classroom
- initiates a self-help community
- somewhere between papers, memos and conference
- cuts down on instructor's "face time" especially private
meetings
- extends the classroom
Using listserv effectively
- create an expectation of activity
- create an expectation of response
- create a sense of a community
- create, reward, resist
- moderate when necessary
- stimulate when necessary
- modify when necessary
