Middle East Imperialism

Excerpt from For a Just Middle East Peace: Two States for Two Peoples, by Tim Wheeler, August 1997, Political Affairs, theoretical journal of the Communist Party USA

...Tamar Goshansky, a member of the Israeli Knesset and a leader of the Communist Party of Israel scornfully debunked Clinton's pose. "And what is the role of the Clinton Administration?" she asked us during a briefing in the CPI's offices in Nazareth. "Clinton preferred the Labor Party but Clinton is now backing Netanyahu all the way. What US interests are served in backing Netanyahu if the peace process was organized under US auspices? I think the American administration is not opposed to 'local' wars."

She charged that it goes hand-in-hand with an even deeper penetration of Israel by giant US transnational corporations which are buying out Israeli industries, busting the unions and slashing wages. Netanyahu has embraced Washington's austerity policies of slashing funding for social programs, privatizing the nationalized sector of the economy, exacerbating the income gap between rich and poor.
