The "boatanchors" list on The Porch, once known for many lively discussions on a varity of topics, has gotten quiet, as have a lot more lists. Now- if your hobby has any depth- you must seek out and subscribe to a dozen lists (and entrust your email address to a dozen providers like Yahoo). All because either someone wants to be a "list master," or they can't tolerate diverse posts. It's sad. ------------------------------ Message-ID: <000b01c9863f$74e49990$e09e480c@KB6NAX> From: "Arden Allen" To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: Subscribe?? Another harmful aspect of the "information age," the Balkanization of knowledge. It used to was natural impediments like mountain ranges, jungles and oceans kept societies isolated from each other, mostly to their benefit. Now with self-anointed religio-political blogomaniac warlords on the rampage the internet has become a virtual badlands. My dad, a reader of books (remember those?), once complained the problem with gaining knowledge was books were published faster than he could read them all. Big mistake, the invention of the printing press.... After getting the front panel and knobs back on fired it up on 40 meters and switched to Phone. Did the old put the finger on the mike center connection and saw the mod meter and power out go way up. After much digging in my junk boxes, found a used mike connector and wired up the old D-104. Monitored on the NC-300 with the dummy load on the DX-100 and got some surpassingly good audio. Great, all the Iron was good. Next tried tune up on 160 and 80M, Nada, Back to 40 and above, no problem, even on 10 was getting good power out. OK, got the dip meter out and checked for a dip on the tank coil, nada on 160 and 80, but got sharp dips on 40 and above. Carefully checked and retighten the tank coil connections and noticed that someone had soldered a link on the 10 M coil to short out one turn. Who knows at this point, flipped the rig back over on it's side and checked out the bandswitch connections to the tank. This guy had the mod to get rid of the course load caps and replace the cap with the 3 gang 1500 uuF one. That looked OK. Then I noticed that someone had added a strap from ground to the 1st tap on the tank coil effectively eliminating the 80 M band. I cut that out and flipped the rig back over. Got a good dip now and was able to resonate on 80M. Still no 160M dip. Flipped it back over on it's side, BTW iam starting to look like Charles Atlas, found the 160M contacts and they were just shorted together. At this time I realized, hey the 160M plate coil is completely missing.. I do have a lead on one we will see what happens when I get it. Part 6 to follow with the loud POP. I've added some more photos and info to my SSB-1 web site, http://www.virhistory.com/navy/xmtrs/ssb1.htm , including a cutaway of the RCA mechanical filter used in later s/n (the earliest s/n used Collins F250Z-4 filters). I have info on the original (Mk I?), the Mk II, and the Mk IV - has anyone got info or photo of the Mk III ? Would also like a block diagram and/or tube lineup on the Mk IV - am I correct in thinking these used 7360 balanced mixers instead of the earlier 12AT7 circuit? cheers, Nick K4NYW www.virhistory.com/navy ------------------------------ Message-ID: <05C1F53A85424757997740D2FDE8B5D3@cs.unc.edu> From: "Nick England" To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Richmond VA hamfest this Saturday Feb 7 Date: Wed, 4 Feb 2009 21:46:57 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hope to see some of you guys there. Still waiting for a lead on the 160M plate coil..... Decided to see why the the HV leads from the HV transformer were hanging in mid air, taped up, going to the plates of the 5R4's. OK I pulled the tubes and sure enough, there was a carbon trace on one of the ceramic sockets to ground. Took out the dremil tool with a very small engraving bit, an made short work of that. The socket mounting fiber washers looked compress so I made a trip to my favorite ACE Hardware and picked up four new ones. Don't know what I would do without that local ACE. OK, got the rectifier tubes back installed and looked at the terminal strip were the HV leads were supposed be connected. It looked ok from my angle of view so I just solder everything back like in the pictorial. Plugged it in an hitting the plate switch a large POW and frying noise came from the direction of the terminal strip. Of course fuses blew immediately. Now I don't claim to be the sharpest tool in the shed, but this should have been obvious to me. Why with the HV leads off that terminal strip and even with the carbon arc on the rectifier socket , it worked ok. I guess sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. Unsoldered the leads to the terminal strip and checked across it with a Ohm meter. My GOD, dead short. No wonder the guy removed the leads from it. Desoldered everything on that strip and removed it, WOW big time carbon arc between the two lugs for the HV. I look around in my junk box and found a close replacement. Wired it in, connected all leads back as per the diagram and all is well. Well, thats were it stands so far, looking for a 160M plate coil, Part 40-59, advise on winding one, etc. Part 7 will follow in the future.
