I usually use a 47 to 100 ohm 2 watt carbon resistor. If you have a severe parasitic problem where the suppressor resistor is overheating, you can easily use three 150 ohm 2 watters and wind a coil on that. Another type resistor that is very good for parasitic supressors is the "globar" type that looks like on old bare carbon resistor. We used to have 1.5 kw shipboard rigs that used one in each plate lead (transmitter used three 4-400A's in parallel) [QY4-400's actually]. They were rated at around 100 ohms at 7.5 watts each. 73, Sandy W5TVW ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Hardie" To: "Old Tube Radios" Sent: Saturday, April 11, 2009 12:22 PM Subject: Value of Resistor In Parasitic Surpressor > I'm replacing the parasitic surpressor resistor on a Ranger 1, the > resistor > that has a coil wound around it and leads from the final plate. When I first viewed this message, the "truncated" box was all that was visible. When selecting View>Message>Plain Text Alternative (Mac Mail) the message is readable in full. Mac mail allows the option of *sending* mail in plain or fancy format, but there is no such option for received messages. I find it a bit ironic that a "no attachments allowed" warning message is *itself* a MIME text attachment that masks the suspect email and requires the reader to take action to view the message. In a small way, this is *good* as an email that contained phony links would require a deliberate extra step to view. The down- side, of course, is folks that use an mail service that automatically appends a footer with a "safe" link is treated in the same way as would be a message that contained a deliberately misleading url. Per Dr Porch and Jack the ListMaster, this filter script has quite effective - and it *does* treat everyone equally, as it blocks Robert Downs' posts just as effectively as a spammer posting a phony "masked" web address within an html/richtext message. Because of the decent quality of this list, I'll continue to put up with it a few extra keystrokes to read the good stuff. 73 Tom (PS/FWIW - "Masked" links are web addresses within an email that appear *text-wise* to be a proper link, but take the victim to a different address. The web site is usually a clone of a major service's web page, and the "proper" web address may be shown in the victim's url-bar, further misleading the victim. Most such spams attempt to harvest ebanking, ebay and paypal user information, some go as far as to imitate official government agencies and attempt to lure SSN and other vital personal info from the victim. Most if not all email programs released within the past ten years will indicate the real url/web address of the link if the reader hovers the mouse the link *before clicking* the link. HOWEVER, surveys suggest the average internet user don't bother to look before clicking, which is why such phoney emails are such a success. Same with many attachments that appear harmless, some folks click without questioning - or worse, have their email program auto-open attachments. Outlook Express used to default on "auto- open" which is why Windows users are targeted most often. Also many Windows users don't have decent or currently updated antivirus software or other protection such as a firewall. Most of the folk on *THIS* list are above average internet users and know about these and other computer security issues.) There are two types and they are absolutely identical EXCEPT for the pin connections. You will smoke something if you plug in the wrong cord. I ordered a couple several years ago and I think that I got them from Mouser. Price was not bad. The cords that I got actually had a large, yellow tag attached warning of the pin connection problem. There's a story behind this of course. I first saw a Klein being used in 1972 during a visit to KFS. I had to have one but it wasn't until 20 years later that I saw one at the Foothill flea market in California. I threw myself on it which is a poor opening position for negotiation. But I made it mine and waddled off cackling to myself over the new acquisition. The Klein was a fixture at all coast stations. It was used to make a loop that was used as the wheel. Press and weather were punched on the Klein for transmission. They have three speed transmissions and can be run at hundreds of words a minute. This was used to push as much traffic across point to point circuits, especially during the war. At KPH/KSM we like to use this kind of vintage gear and indeed once had a wheel of paper tape for use on KSM. But the Klein and the Boehme keying head started developing problems. Now with Paul's help (he'll be looking at the keying head too) we hope to run paper tape again. See photos at: http://picasaweb.google.com/richard.dillman/Klein?feat=directlink VY 73, RD * Even though universally referred to as the "Klein", short for Kleinschmidt, all the ones I've seen have Teletype nameplates. ================================= Richard Dillman, W6AWO Chief Operator, Coast Station KSM Maritime Radio Historical Society http://www.radiomarine.org ================================= ------------------------------ From: "Nick England" To: Old Tube Radios Subject: RE: CONAR AM Transmitter ??
