On the schematic, I read the following: 12AX7 speech amp: pin 1, 100 volts; pin 2 and 3, 0 volts; pin 6, 120 = volts; pin 8, 1.2 volts. 6DR7 modulator: pin 7 - 1.0 volts (might be -10, but I think it's 1.0); = pins 6, 2 and 3, 56 volts; pin1, 640 volts; pin 9, 152 volts. =20 Voltages are measured from pins to chassis ground with a VTVM. Operators will not be listening for calls from ships. Operations will commence at about 1000pdt/1700utc on both CW and RTTY. K6KPH will not be available. The reason for this change is that the National Park Service will be doing an extensive cleaning of the operating room at the receive station. Some may say this is overdue as I doubt the place has been really cleaned since it was installed! In any case the claening will be incompatible with normal operations. In a related note, we have received requests from listeners who use our 25wpm broadcasts for code practice for something less predictable than the highly formatted weather broadcasts. Thus the Transmitter Department has agreed to provide extended press and weather service on CW on a regular basis. Steve will edit his usual RTTY broadcasts to make them applicable for CW. These transmissions will be keyed from the Bolinas transmitter site. The KSM 2130utc weather broadcast will be keyed from the receiver site as usual. The older I get the more I look forward to Dayton. Somebody told me that the weather forecast is very good for the weekend. That won't be any fun! Don't have a 3430 kc crystal -- lot less QRM on that frequency!i Anyone else need something? It may be lurking in my barn! The antenna system out there for the "fun radios" is starting to rival the serious DX stuff! In the last 2 weekends I have made 200 QSOs out there with the Ranger II and newly working R4C. I learned a lot in working with the R4C -- actually "re-learned" to never trust a tube tester, even a TV7D/U. Finally, on my 7th substitution, I found a WORKING 6EJ7 third mixer. The other 6 tested fine, but until I put in a PHILIPS, the receiver was sick. Now it sounds like the receiver that I remember. Soon I will be able to switch between the R4C, 2B, and 75A4 in quick fashion. The Ranger II occupies the "catbird" seat for transmitting, but will probably put one of the newly working T4XC transmitters in line too, especially for the WARC bands. All of us know how much fun it is to actually make contacts with this grand old stuff. Conditions overall may be lousy, but its not holding me back. 73 Don K8MFO In a message dated 5/11/2009 2:43:31 P.M. (Directly across a higher voltage winding on the power transformer?) Was it a line filter cap? Is there enough of the cap left to get a tentative measurement of value for the uF? It's possible that the 5 is the uF value since a tolerance is given. What was the approximate size? I am big on recycling microwave oven capacitors. Most are newer and are marked "no PCB's" and have a typical value of 1 uF of just under. Advantage is serious voltage rating and cheap or free. Some have bleeders built in. Have used them in scope hi-volt circuits. You can probably fit the five cells per that you will need into that space. /scott ------------------------------ Message-ID: <4A09B106.2090504@comcast.net> Date: Tue, 12 May 2009 13:25:26 -0400 From: Shriver MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: HP-403B AC Voltmeter, Battery Replacement Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From your description, those sound like the early version of the batteries, which are built out of button cells. NiCd button cells are no longer available. If they are oriented across the instrument, they are the old version. Later units used four long skinny batteries, oriented fore-to-aft. I think they are made of 1/3AA cells. (I'm not ambitious enough to tear down my 403B to see.) You are looking for 225 milliamp-hour cells. Many NiCd vendors can weld up batteries out of cells, each of these is 5 cells welded with tabs, and you want solder tabs at the ends. You will need to devise a new way to secure them. HP used a pair of plastic brackets that have deep notches for the four tubes, two in each side. They aren't very rigid or well-designed.
