In the KPH archives there are photos of Position 1 showing an Atalanta in service. I was always intrigued by the photo which was particularly evocative because it shows Bill Meloney, acknowledged as one of the best Morse operators the station ever saw. As far as we knew the Atalanta went to the dump. After years of looking I found an Atalanta in great condition on eBay and made it mine. As so often happens in such cases it wasn't long after the Atalanta arrived that I found myself grubbing around in a basement not far from KPH. I was on the track of lost transmitter BL-11, the backup to MF transmitter BL-10. I succeeded in finding the transmitter and wa on my way out when I saw... something on the floor at the other end of the room. I knew what it was immediately bit it took a while to really accept what I was seeing: the original KPH Atalanta. So now we have two Atalanta, the original and the eBay acquisition. On Saturday 6/20 the eBay Atalanta will be in service at Position 1 as the 500kc receiver. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The annual Maritime Radio Historical Society "Night of Nights" event is less than one month away. This will be the tenth annual Night of Nights! Every year on 12 July (US time) many famous coast stations return to the air to commemorate what was then thought to be the last commercial Morse stations in the USA. Since then MRHS coast station KSM has taken to the air and three other commercial coast stations have received licenses for operation in the MF band (KNE, KDR and WFT). Historic ships have reactivated their radio consoles and are active on MF and HF. The purpose of Night of Nights is to emphasize the objective of the MRHS: to preserve the skills, traditions and culture of the men and women who came before us and who made the profession of radiotelegrapher one of honor and skill. This year stations KPH, and KSM will be on the air. We anticipate that KFS will be on the air as well. We hope that US Coast Guard stations NMC, NOJ and NMN will join us as they did last year. Amateur station K6KPH will guard 3550, 7050 and 14050kc for reception reports. Preliminary information has been posted on the MRHS Web site: http://www.radiomarine.org Check back often for updated information as it becomes available. On June 20 at 8:03 PM MDT, VE6XI sent out a CQ via AM on 3740.01 KC using a WW II Collins- designed ART-13 feeding 2 amps. of RF into 59' of end fed wire. 27 volts was fed to the DY-17 dynamotor that powered the ART-13. The audio input was by the traditional T-17 military microphonium which employs excited carbon granules. At the end of the CQ , a listening watch was started using a WW II Wells-Gardner BC-348 receiver which was powered by its internal dynamotor tapping off the ART-13 power source. Almost immediately a station with the callsign of VE6XX replied and a exchange of vital technical information was made. The XI signal was reported as 20 over at the XX site about 8 miles west of Champion, AB. The XX signal at XI's station was in the old original measure of evaluation as 4 x 5. XX was emitting about 25 watts using a ricebox 2 way radio of Japanese ancestry. A full wave loop designed for 160 metres transferred the oscillations to the ether. Of note was that VE6XI made this first ever contact, for him, using the arcane Amplitude Modulation method. This in spite of having held an Amateur licence since 1948. He has been heard on 40 metres using a modern sandbox radio emanating single sideband. This should not be held against him however. Further contacts will be made between XI & XX when XX sets up a ricebox radio having a 6 kc IF bandpass to better evaluate the near -broadcast quality of the ART-13, at which time the microphonium will be a post WW II dynamic of superior performance. XI hopes that in the near future the ether will be excited in Lethbridge where VE6AGH is standing by with also truly genuine WW II radio equipment to carry out a 2 way contact. I have been fortunate enough to get a nice Rohde & Schwarz NV 1/156 VHF MULTI-COUPLER, which is a tubed unit, manufactured around 1966. It has an input and five outputs. Tube lineup is: EC80, E180F, 5x EF802, 85A2. It covers from 100 to 156MHz. It works but it is a bit deaf. It has a voltage checker with 8 positions. All read fine (in the BLUE and RED scale) except #1, which is lots lower. I guess this means a soft #1 tube (EC80, E80C, 6Q4). Of course, my stock of it is zero. Could somebody help me to find one? A service manual for the NV 1 VHF-Trennverstärker is available from Rainer Foertig. Sorry no price given, you have to ask. http://www.rainer-foertig.de/unterlagen/RS-16.htm I will see Rainer next week to get a mediumwave power amp, he has in stock for some time. I can ask him. The broken meter seems to be the standard R&S meter case with slightly rounded edges. I think it is a Gossen meter. These meters were used in 3 different sizes. Give me the outside dimensions and I might be able to get you a meter. You probably have to change the innards if the replacement has another rating. The black AEG mystery thing is a selenium rectifier. It says 400V and 100mA, probably a dual unit. Two 1N4007 will work fine. The control function for the tubes is a standard R&S feature of that time. It allows you to check tube operation. If it is outside the colored range the tube is bad. Ok it could be that a resistor changed value but usually it is the tube. I think that I don't have an EC80 but www.askjanfirst.de has it available for €19.72 vy 73 Heinz DH2FA, KM5VT Jose V. How many does he need of 723? Will In a message dated 6/28/2009 10:04:21 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, radios@sbcglobal.net writes: As I am sure many of you know, Tom Aschenbrenner has spent hundreds of hours restoring the electronic equipment on board the USS Cobia, perhaps the most authentic remaining World War II submarine. He has the surface search radar operating and licensed. As I recall, it is an SG. They believe that it is the only World War II radar operating in its original configuration and the oldest operating radar in the world. He cannot post to the list from the museums web site so he has asked me to post this appeal for parts. Anyone who can help can reply directly to the email below: tom@aschen.com I'm at the boat and can't post on boat anchors. Could you pls put a note out that if anyone has any 723A 723B Klystrons that I would like to buy them for use in the COBIAs ST-1 radar? These are used for the L.O. I also need 724Bs which are used for the TR and ATR switches. You can have them respond to Tom@Aschen.com since I can get that mail. Also, I wonder if posting to the ARC5 list might reach the right folks? Thanks, Tom A. PS: you think its possible to get a cherry SCR-624 ? That is what is supposed to be on COBIA. We have all the cabling for it and the space where it goes (currently used as a shelf) but are missing the radio and remote control head.
