You can = buy 1 amp, 1 KV diodes from Mouser for very little, for example their = part number 863-1N4007G for all of 8 cents each. Put as many of them in = series as makes you comfortable. Your peak inverse voltage would be a = maximum of 2.83 times (2 times the square root of 2) times the RMS value = of your center-tap-to-end voltage of your power transformer. I'd add at = least a 100% margin of safety to account for line voltage spikes that = will carry through the transformer to the diodes. =20 So for example, if the ct to end RMS transformer voltage is 1000 volts, = the peak inverse voltage your diodes would see would be 2830 volts, and = I'd use a series string of 6 diodes to provide 6 KV peak inverse = capability. The forward drop of 6 diodes would be only about 6 times = 0.7 volts or 4.2 volts, and that's less than the 11 or so volts forward = drop of a mercury vapor rectifier. =20 I notice you've been advised to parallel the diodes with capacitors and = resistors. That was the standard practice very early on when diodes had = unmatched leakage resistance and capacitance. These days the diodes = you'll get from a source like Mouser are so well matched that the = additional resistors and capacitors are no longer necessary. What's = more, resistors are generally not rated for voltages as high as 1 KV, = and the capacitors are also more likely to break down and cause a diode = string failure than the diodes themselves are. So you are better off = from a reliability standpoint not to include the parallel caps and = resistors. =20 You don't need any fancy plugs. Just wire the diode string directly = across the 816 tube socket terminals, and detach the filament = transformer leads for safety sake to avoid any problem in case the = insulation of the filament transformer winding should break down. = Viking Valiant 866 filament windings are notorious for that particular = failure mode. Mouser's internet address is www.mouser.com/ . Go for it! Includes speaker. Condition is good, but not perfect. Radio has been stored in a dry environment, not used for several years. I will provide pictures to serious collectors. 2 National HRO-7 good original condition [no speaker] includes factory "doghouse" power supply. 4 coilsets in factory wood case included. Recapped. Not run for many years onshelf in dry conditions. These items are nice as is. Perfectionists would restore these easy. A "ball park" price for these items around $300 each. [this is not Ebay]. My QTH is Erie PA. Please consider this for shipping and weight, as these are heavy items. I would prefer to have them professionally packed by UPS store. Pick up would be best. i do not mind having them sit here for a while, as long as paid for. I will be set up selling at Warren Hamfest- near Warren OH. July 26th. I can bring these. I might consider your trade of other good BA gear? thanks for looking-happy BA hunting. It sucks for those who would have a hard time sorting out what their OTA non-reception problems. For me, I resent the idiotic form DTV has taken. It's a pean to the cable & satellite companies and if designed to evetually eliminate OTA TV it is a good start. For 18 years I watched TV on rabbit ears. I live on the urban-suburban dividing line and although signal strength is adequate the problems of ghosting, aircraft flutter and weather effects I suffered sublimely. But now, with a Winegard amplified omni-directional antenna 10 feet above my roof I get only three channels free of any breakup. The rest come and go as they please. Supposedly transmitting antennas will be improved in the next few months so I'll have to grin and wait. Forget about portable TV's, folks, ....impossible. The damn fools who contrived our DTV standards didn't know sheeeet about communications. When a DTV signal drops below reliable decoding the first thing to go is the sound. I had to give up on watching a Sherlock Holmes episode on PBS last night because the dialog is everything to a good who-dunnit. I once read the FCC settled on a system that was not as propagation resilient as other systems around the world. Try to dig ourselves out of this mess .......Ha! Once again, our corporation corrupted government screws us good. The only salvation is when my year old pitbull puppy watches TV. She doesn't need the sound, she doesn't even listen to me. }:-( Arden Allen KB6NAX Adopt a shelter dog, save an innocent life, and make a friend forever =:-) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <003901ca08a3$bee8f4f0$4100000a@CPQ10443900021> From: "Guido" To: Old Tube Radios Subject: SX28 Audio Tx Date: Sun, 19 Jul 2009 16:04:28 -0300 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I know that this probably is a difficult one but, does anyone has an extra SX28 audio transformer and is willing to sell it? So when he volunteered to assist the Transmitter Department ( Steve Hawes, Bill Ruck and Mike Johnson) for this year's Night of Nights his generous offer was immediately accepted. Paul also made several videos of the event. The video of Denice sending the benediction was the subject of an earlier message. Now let's look at the videos Paul made of the transmitting station in Bolinas in full song. While we're on the air with KSM and K6KPH each Saturday, on Night of Nights just about every transmitter in the gallery is banging away, originating signals KPH, KFS, KSM and K6KPH. Here's an overall view of the upstairs transmitter gallery (the downstairs gallery contains the MF transmitter for 500kc and 426kc as well as two 1940s vintage Press Wireless PW15 transmitters). It was shot from atop the control room. It gives you a good view of the "modern" (1991) Henry transmitters as well as the vintage (1950s) RCA sets. The RCA "K" and "L" transmitters are in operation, in addition to the Henrys. At one point Paul aims down giving a good view of the "L" set in operation directly outside the control room. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJMMYriZ0WQ&feature=channel_page Next, here's a view of the 12Mc PW15 on the ground floor in action (no audio on this video, apparently). Note the flashing thyratron tubes. When this transmitter arrived at Bolinas from the Globe Wireless transmitter site in Palo Alto, CA (along with its mate - a story in itself) all the thyratrons you see had been removed along with their filament transformers and wiring. However the Transmitter Department painstakingly restored the transmitter to its former glory by return these tubes to their proper places and re-installing the transformers. He would like to know how to sign up again for the list as both he and I have forgotten. Yeah, I know, I slept since then. If anyone knows, please reply directly to Tom at tom@aschen.com. Many of you may remember that Tom is they guy who restored the search radar on the submarine Cobia and the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc Wisconsin. Quite a few submarines were built in Manitowoc during the war by the company that now builds the red Manitowoc cranes that you see at a lot of construction sites. As near as anyone has been able to find out, the Cobia radar (licensed by the way) is the oldest operating radar in the world and is the only operating World War II radar. Thanks for the help.
