It is seldom that I work on Solid State radios but this one has special interest. It is one of the early radios from the 60s that included a really usable VHF band. Yes, it is one of those multiband sets but this one is of better quality than the rest. The radio is a Westinghouse RPM5020 covering the usual AM, FM, VHF, MB and SW bands. The radio almost qualifies as a BA by size alone but its all solid state. I went through this radio cleaning everything including the band switch that received a DeOxit bath. After this, bands MB and AM only work when you blow some hot air in the band switch. As it cools down, the AM band starts gradiually losing reception from 1.6MHz and sometimes only 580kHz remains alive. The other bands are OK. This band switch has the wafers sandwiched together quite tight.Has anyone see anything like this before using DeOxit? Any suggestions? BTW for those of you that have Len Buckwalter's book "The ABC of Shortwave Listening" this radio appears in a photo of a multiband capable of receiving the public service bands that at the time were changing to VHF. I had a 4300 back when they were new, it's worst failure (other than only single conversion) was that dial vernier mechanism. They changed it a bit in the 4350, I think they made the shaft a bit smaller where the balls run on it. The 4300's problem was that the balls would "brinell" the shaft, dimpling it and making things jumpy, etc. The 4350 hopefully was somewhat improved in that respect. RME did not have any shafts available when I asked, probably 3-5 yrs after they brought out the 4350, and maybe they were disappearing then. One guy sent me a shaft out of his desk drawer, but it was for the 4350. I vaguely remember trying grease and dry to help, but nothing did in the end. I sold it some yrs later, as-is, after carrying it around to several QTH's. Never have wanted another. Good luck. 73, Al, W8UT New Bern, NC www.boatanchors.org www.hammarlund.info "there is nothing -absolutely nothing- half as much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." I have attached links to photos of a homebrew, high-power, link-coupled balanced ATU. As you can see in the photos, the coils I'm needing plug in to the top of the Steatite jack bar. These coils are all on a 8.25" base. I have coils for 160m and the one seen for 80m. From my vintage Allied Radio, Newark and Federal Radio catalogs, B&W appears to have made these sets beginning in the mid-'40s and well into the '50s. http://216.229.20.37/images/BW-1.jpg http://216.229.20.37/images/BW-2.jpg http://216.229.20.37/images/BW-3.jpg http://216.229.20.37/images/BW-4.jpg (Yes, that's a 9KV variable air cap you see in the photo. At that rating, who needs vacuum variables?) Thanks! Paul, W9AC ------------------------------ End of BOATANCHORS Digest 4282 ******************************
