I'm helping a friend-of-a-friend find a good home for this cool receiver. I have no stakes in it myself, other than to help the owner link up with a boat anchor collector who will give this fine receiver some T.L.C., operate it, enjoy it, and keep it in his collection. The seller received it from the original purchaser, an engineer, now sk. He does not want to see this unit resold on the auction sites for a profit. If you can respect these wishes, please read on. This is an art deco style Hallicrafters SX-25 with matching speaker (might be the PM-23?). The case of the receiver and speaker have no metal dents, etc. They have virtually no damage to the paint but show the normal dirt, etc., of a fifty year old radio. There are some rather minor cabinet flaws which are evident in the photos. Inside and outside the radio would benefit from a going over with 409 cleaner. The main tuning dial cord is broken but present. Has all original knobs. The output transformer has been replaced with a Stancor A3880, which we believe is the correct replacement impedance and power value. The receiver has hum, but receives strong stations in the BC band and also 80 meter ham band. The speaker has a 5000 ohm to 8 Ohm transformer and its voice coil is good. The plastic in the dials has discolored over time but would be replaceable. The receiver has had the line cord replaced with a 3 wire grounded cord. Other than the above, we don't know anything else about it, but it appears to be in nice shape. The receiver is not in my possession, so I am the middle-man for the descriptions & photos. If you are interested, please email me off-list and I will send you photos and what other info I have. The seller STRONGLY desires that this unit be picked up (Kansas City area), however professional packing + shipping + insurance are options. If you've done this before you can probably estimate the costs. The weight, unpacked, is about 46 pounds for the receiver, and about 20 pounds for the speaker. If you wish to purchase the unit I will put you in touch with the seller, and you can work out your own arrangements. Payment by USPS money order (sorry, no PayPal or other electronic means). Everything described here is as accurate info as we can provide, ditto the photos, however unit is offered as-is. Please let us know if you have any interest! KYVM will be QRV on 500kc/425kc. Steve may also test the console with newly obtained crystals for the 4Mc and 6Mc ITU channel 3 calling frequencies on HF. For reference, the ITU channel 3 calling frequencies are: 4184.0kc, 6276.0kc, 8368.0kc, 12552.0kc, 16736.0kc and 22280.5kc KSM will be on the air as usual with these exceptions: 22Mc CW and both RTTY frequencies will be unavailable. Morning press and weather will be available as usual (with the above exceptions) but keyed from the receiving station (Steve usually keys these transmissions from the transmitting station while we are all consuming coffee and pastry in the Engineer's Lounge during Services of the Church of the Continuous Wave). When working KYVM (or any other ship) KSM will key all channels, no matter what frequency the ship calls on so that listeners on any channel will be able to hear at least one side of the contact. If the ship calls on a HF calling frequency and shifts to a working frequency, that frequency will be repeated by KSM so listeners can try to hear the ship as well. This was contrary to procedure during the heyday of KPH, after crystal control gave way to synthesized transmitters. You never wanted to give away the frequency you were listening on or other ships would immediately shift there and start calling. So a simple UP was all that was transmitted. K6KPH will be available as usual on 3550kc, 7050kc, 14050kc and 21050kc. K6YVM, using the Mackay radio console, will be on 3545kc. K6KPH will be QRV for traffic from K6YVM, transmitting on 3550kc. Thus the amateur service will replicate commercial service by using duplex transmission. Amateur stations may call K6KPH on any of its working frequencies. Best results will be had by using commercial calling procedures: call K6KPH repeatedly until the operator replies with a DE, then give your call. The amateur calling frequencies are in the scan with the commercial calling frequencies so it may take a minute or two for your call to be heard. It may occasionally take longer for calls to be answered if the one operator on duty is busy with guests, lunch or other essential matters. If this occurs we apologize and hope that you will wait a few minutes and try again. KSM and K6KPH will be on the air beginning 1000pdt, 1700gmt. The Homefront Festival begins at 1100pdt, 1800gmt. Best regards and happy listening... I thought others might appreciate seeing the answer. ----- >Cool. I am monitoring 6474 and will QSY if I hear you calling KECW. > >What is HF Channel 3 you ask people to answer on? Each HF marine band for ships is divided into a multiplicity of channels for the area of each ocean the ship is in and whether the ship is a high traffic or low traffic vessel. Such was the level of traffic in the golden years that this kind of subdivision was necessary to accommodate everyone and even then ships were piled up on each other calling coast stations. Channel 3 in each band is the global calling frequency for use by any ship anywhere. Since the level of CW traffic today is so low this is the channel we monitor in each band for calls since any CW equipped ship will have this frequency. Or should. In the case of KECW we listen on 6Mc QRG they have a crystal for. The channel 3 frequencies are: 4184.0, 6276.0, 8368.0, 12552.0, 16736.0 and 22280.5kc RD ================================= Richard Dillman, W6AWO Chief Operator, Coast Station KSM Maritime Radio Historical Society http://www.radiomarine.org ================================= ------------------------------ Message-ID: <08b201ca3fb7$9e954c30$6601a8c0@K0DAN> From: "K0DAN" To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: For sale National NC173 Date: Sun, 27 Sep 2009 16:13:29 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=response Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Thanks for all the inquiries the NC173 has been sold, picked up locally, and now has a new home. 73 Dan K0DAN ------------------------------ Message-ID: <08b301ca3fb7$9efbd630$6601a8c0@K0DAN> From: "K0DAN" To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: NATIONAL NC173 Date: Sun, 27 Sep 2009 16:14:27 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_08A2_01CA3F8D.96081090" This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_08A2_01CA3F8D.96081090 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Thanks for all the inquiries the NC173 has been sold, picked up locally, = and now has a new home. 73 Dan K0DAN ----- Original Message -----=20 From: K0DAN=20 To: boatanchors@theporch.com=20 Sent: Sunday, September 20, 2009 3:37 PM Subject: FS: NATIONAL NC173 FS: NATIONAL NC173 General Coverage + 6M receiver, without speaker, = good condition, $75 O.B.O. ------=_NextPart_000_08A2_01CA3F8D.96081090 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ---REMAINDER OF MESSAGE TRUNCATED--- * * This post contains a forbidden message format * * (such as an attached file, a v-card, HTML formatting) * * Mail Lists at theporch.com only accept PLAIN TEXT * * If your postings display this message your mail program * * is not set to send PLAIN TEXT ONLY and needs adjusting * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ------=_NextPart_000_08A2_01CA3F8D.96081090-- ------------------------------ Message-ID: <08ae01ca3fb7$9cfb4b40$6601a8c0@K0DAN> From: "K0DAN" To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: HALLICRAFTERS SX25 "SUPER DEFIANT" Date: Sun, 27 Sep 2009 16:11:45 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=response Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Thanks for all the inquiries the SX25 & speaker have been sold, picked up locally, and now have a new home. 73 Dan K0DAN ------------------------------ End of BOATANCHORS Digest 4288 ******************************
