Mainly to check magnets in permag loudspeakers. It doesn't actually have to be battery operated. Just not too large. Nothing larger than 19" rack x 5-1/2". Anything from Bell 600 on would be OK. AC response performance immaterial as usage will be to check permanent magnets. Probe can be axial or transverse, but the axial ones have better survivablility. Analog readout (meter). You find an FM mode on some receivers & transmitters of that era. It is much less expensive to FM a transmitter than to AM it. You don't need a high lever modulator & heavy modulating iron. Trouble is on the receiver side. An FM signal set to occupy no more than an equivalently-modulated AM signal (around 2.5 kHz deviation) will have relatively little energy in its sidebands. It will sound like an AM signal having maximum modulation of only about 40%. It is the sidebands which convey the intelligence, so... Also, the FM advantages (quieting, AM rejection, capture ratio, solid squelch action) will be much reduced or disappear at such small deviations. In other words, it just didn't work out. On 10 m these days, you can run +-5 kHz FM above 29.0 MHz. Four repeater pairs & one national calling freq. live above 29.5 MHz. And of course, going to narrower band FM means your FM equipment might as well be toast. Do I see commercial interests skulking about? Yessss, replace that KenYaeCom radio! --John WB0EQ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <4AC65B9D.1020105@debitel.net> Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2009 21:59:25 +0200 From: Heinz Breuer MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Wtd: Manual copy of the National LF10 lf converter Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-15; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello, I got my National LF10 lf converter out of storage. This is a low frequency converter for the HRO 500. I bought it a couple years ago, to complete my HRO 500 setup. Unfortunately the condition was not as good as advertized and I put it in storage to calm down. Now several years later I am ready to give it a try. Unfortunately I don't have neither the manual nor the large 18-pin connector. The LF10 is also missing nearly all cabinet screws and feet. There was a strange transmitting filter wrapped into newspaper inside. No idea what this is. So I really need the manual. Is it available for download? I see that Manual Man and W7FG has copies avaliable and I will order one just to have a clear schematic but due to transit time to Germany it will probably be two weeks until I have it in hand and I would appreciate a downloaded manual now to get going. vy 73 de Heinz DH2FA, KM5VT ------------------------------ Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v753.1) Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <34EFE141-9E3B-419A-83ED-8F53E3795BC4@charter.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed To: Old Tube Radios From: Charles Brenner Subject: R390A/URR Manual Copy For Sale Date: Fri, 2 Oct 2009 16:41:43 -0500 The manual (NAVSHIPS 0967-063-2010) is a xerox copy with the fold outs being reproduced on 11-3/4 x 16-1/2 paper. When I went to work for my present employer in 1980 I found that very machine on the bench and I could not find a single use for it as I was there to fix computer peripherals with a sideline in audio equipment but no TV sets. I traded it to Cardinal Electronics (an Edmonton parts distributer at the time) for a B&K oscilloscope to back up my Tek 465. Transmitter Supervisor Steve Hawes was aboard SS RED OAK VICTORY/KYVM (San Francisco Bay) so he could not be on duty at the transmitting station. That was not a big problem because all the CW transmitters except 22mc can be remotely controlled from the receiving station. However it meant that RTTY service was unavailable since Steve runs that from the transmitting station. It also meant that the 1000pdt/1700gmt CW press service, which Steve also normally keys, had to be originated by me at the receiving site. I edited that the day before so again, not a big problem. The best part of the day started with copying traffic from KYVM on MF. Steve called on 500 of course after which it was UP 425/426. One of his radiograms was addressed to the Radio Department of SS AMERICAN VICTORY/KKUI (Tampa Bay, Florida). Sure enough, later in the day, KKUI came up on 12Mc with the usual "HW?" It was a pleasure to respond with QSA5 and follow that up with QTC1. Without missing a beat KKUI sent QRV and off we went with the message being quickly QSLed. I have to say it was quite thrilling to QSP real traffic from MF to HF and from one Victory Ship to another. That's not something that happens every day! The traffic list at 2100gmt and the weather at 2130gmt (requiring the sending of TTT on 500) filled the rest of the day. There were quite a few visitors at the receiving station so a lot of folks got to see live commercial CW in action - which is of course one of the primary purposes of our project. I started with a Globe Scout and S-38C (on 15 meters!). He had a SW-54 but eventually graduated to a silky smooth NC-303. I moved to California. So did he for a career in electronics. We met again over the air when I recognized his WA2 call sign - and called him using his Popular Electronics WPE2 call. After the hoped for (and satisfying) "Who is this!?" response we resumed contact. Russ always had good taste in gear and this prompted his acquisition in 1994 of a Collins 208-U3 amplifier. It's rated at 3kW 2-30Mc using a 4CX3000. It's frequency agile and auto tune. Russ recently stepped up to offer the amplifier to the MRHS. We gratefully accepted. With its wide frequency coverage and auto tuning it's a good candidate as part of a backup system for almost any transmitter in the gallery. This past Saturday Bill Ruck organized a work party including Greg and Will to pick up the transmitter and transport it to the Bolinas transmitter site. The men of the MRHS Transmitter Department have begun planning the provision of power and an antenna for the amplifier while discussing schemes for its eventual use.
