Good stuff, too. The terminology seems to have been PACFLT. I don't think I ever heard it from LANTFLT sailors. The manual schematic has values for the 117 volt ballast = written in what appears to be pencil. =20 I can check these values for sanity using Ohm's Law. You need to know = that the filament string draws 0.3 amps when rated voltage is being = dropped across each of the filaments, and that the two #47 pilot bulbs = are rated at 6 volts, 0.15 amps. If you want the pilot bulbs to burn at full brilliance, the resistors = shunting them should also pass 0.15 amps when 6 volts is across them. = So they should be R =3D V/I =3D 6/0.15 =3D 40 ohms each. They are = listed as 17.8 ohms each, which would wind up putting less than 6 volts = across each bulb, running the bulbs dimmer, and giving less than 6 volts = drop across each bulb. It's a little hard to tell exactly what the drop = would be since the bulb resistance varies depending upon the amount of = current flowing through the bulb. But if you want full bulb brilliance, = use a 40 ohm, 1 watt resistor in this service. The net voltage drop across the tube filaments and the bulbs will be: = 25 + 25 + (6 x 6.3) + 6 + 6 =3D 99.8 volts. The voltage drop across the = "main" ballast resistor would then be 117 - 99.8 =3D 17.2 volts and it's = carrying 0.3 amps, so its resistance should be R =3D V/I =3D 17.2/0.3 = =3D 57.33 ohms, and its power rating should be 17.2 x 0.3 =3D 5.16 watts = or more. The resistor value listed is 64 ohms. There would be a = voltage drop across 64 ohms of V =3D R x I =3D 64 x 0.3 =3D 19.2 volts. = So 64 ohms would be the ideal value to use if the line voltage is 99.8 + = 19.2 =3D 119 volts. You can also find the value for whatever your line = voltage is today by a similar application of ohms law. I'd suggest at = using a 10 watt resistor in this spot for safety sake. Hope this is useful. Let me know if you need the values for the 220 = volt ballast or for any other value of line voltage and I can help you = figure them out. 73, Jim, W8KGI ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Brian Goldsmith=20 To: Old Tube Radios=20 Sent: Tuesday, July 20, 2010 4:58 PM Subject: Hallicrafters S-77 balast resistor. The receiver is working fine but the transmitter is only putting out a couple of watts. For a basic check, I have checked the three 6146B's, the 12BY7 driver and the 6DC6 and they are all good. This has put out full power (near 100 watts) in the past but I have not used it in a few years. Set it up yesterday and the output is barely a couple of watts. The transmit audio is fine when listening on another receiver. Any suggestions would be much appreciated? I do have the manual. Does anyone know of anyone who works on these radios? This is a very complex radio.
