WRC-12 Recommendations May Put KSM Off The Air Public comments in support of KSM Are Needed But Time is short - the deadline for comments in 13 August 2010 ----- Here's what's happening: Every few years an international radio conference is held. The next is the World Radio Conference 2012 (WRC-12). The FCC is the US representative to these conferences. For WRC-12 the FCC proposes to support recommendations that would make digital data dominant in the maritime service to such an extent that KSM and other stations could be forced off the air. Here's what you can do: In a Public Notice the FCC has solicited comments from the public regarding the recommendations to be supported at WRC-12. You can file a comment on line to recommend that KSM and other stations using A1A (Morse code) and NBDP (Narrow Band Direct Printing or RTTY) be allowed to continue operation. But time is short! The deadline for filing comments is 13 August 2010. If you'd like to help keep KSM on the air, follow these steps: 1. Read the FCC Public Notice HERE: http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-10-1408A1.doc 2. Read the comments the MRHS has filed with the FCC HERE: http://ddillman.home.igc.org/Radiomarine/Comment.doc 3. File your comment on line in support of KSM. You can do this by uploading a prepared document like the comments the MRHS has filed. Or you can use an on-line form to file brief comments. The proceeding number is 04-286. To file a prepared document go HERE: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/upload/display?z=lg4h3 To file a brief comment go HERE: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/hotdocket/list?z=g4v1a If proceeding number 04-286 is not listed click on the "click here" option to add it. Suggested text: If you wish to upload a prepared document like the comments the MRHS has filed we've provided suggested template for your use. Add your own name and address and modify the text to include your own words as needed. The template may be found HERE: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/hotdocket/list?z=g4v1a If you wish to file a brief comment you might use wording similar to this: "My name is xxx xxxx. I'm writing to support the comments filed by the Maritime Radio Historical Society (MRHS) regarding WRC-12. Specifically, I agree with the MRHS position that the FCC should not support those portions of the recommendations for WRC-12 that would adversely effect MRHS station KSM and other stations in the maritime service." Two issues that I'm aware of.... If you are using a system that produces AC (either from batteries for local use, or a grid-tie system), the type and quality of the inverters is important. Some modified sine wave inverters are very noisy, just a few steps away from multivibrator square wave inverters and DC-DC power supplies. The cells themselves may generate some noise when subjected to strong RF fields. This may be due to "protection diodes" that are used for battery discharge prevention (reverse voltage/current) from battery storage or from the "sunny" panels in a partially shaded array.=20 P.J. The panels are mounted on tracking stands about 100 ft. from my shack, and the cables from the panels go to an inverter which is mounted at the utility entrance panel to my house, which is on an outside wall of my hamshack. The inverter is about four feet from the entrance plate where all the coax and control leads enter my station. There is absolutely no RFI from the inverter, either on the LF or HF bands, nor from the panels. 73, Jim W8ZR > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-boatanchors@theporch.com [mailto:owner-boatanchors@theporch.com] On > Behalf Of P.J. Well here's the lazy man's way to get it back to "acceptable." Make sure your surface is clean and free of loose paint. Go over it with alcohol and some gause or whatever will remove the very last dregs of anything oily or greasy. Get yourself a big black Permanent Marker. Not the dry erase thing; the one that means business. Go over the finish two or three coats and let it dry. Look at this photo: http://home.netcom.com/~arc5/ATB/ATBcasetouchup1.JPG Sorry it's a little out of focus; the LCD screen on my camera is broken and Samsung won't sell me a replacement, so I have to guess when shooting photos. Anyways: This is the top of my ATB. The bottom half has been treated with the marker. The top half is how the whole thing used to look. Once well dry (about 5 minutes), the marker does not come off on your hands. Take a look at the finished top: http://home.netcom.com/~arc5/ATB/ATBcasetouchup2.JPG The angle of the light showes where the scratches were. Normal lighting tones them down alot. The "shinys" will calm down over time. I used a big marker on the case and a "Sharpie" fine point to fill-in the missing black paint on the knobs and a medium "Sharpie" to touch-up the small paint dings on the front. Can you still see where the scratches and dings were? Well, yes you can. But on your shelf they only stand out to you because you knew about them. It actually looks pretty good. And besides: isn't this a fair trade-off, when you consider the time and aggravation of stripping, coating, spraying-on wrinkle, baking it, cussing because it came-out crappy, stripping it again, cussing *again* etc.?? I can live with knowing where the scratches are and, once I consider the alternative above.... Scratches? What scratches? I don't see no scratches... ;-) Try it... you'll like it. 73 DE Dave AB5S ------------------------------ From: WA5CAB@cs.com Message-ID: <3e41b.6809c872.3996cb30@cs.com> Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2010 12:22:08 EDT Subject: Re: [ARC5] Lazy Man's Way to Fix Black Wrinkle To: Old Tube Radios MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="part1_3e41b.6809c872.3996cb30_boundary" --part1_3e41b.6809c872.3996cb30_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit This also works pretty well on screw heads that were originally either black oxide or black painted finish. For those in the US who don't know this radio, it's a British communications receiver from the late 1940s early 1950s. It's not particularly attractive but was an advanced design for its day and capable of very good performance. I liked it because it uses the EF50 - "the valve that won the Battle of Britain" - many of which are sitting in Aussie junk boxes with few prospects (a bit like the 6AC7 :-) It's an odd tube in that it's all glass construction which was then canned. You can peel off the aluminium can and be left with a functional tube. The radio covers 2 MC to 60 MC in 5 bands. It's a double conversion superhet with 2 EF50 RF amps feeding a EF50 mixer with another EF50 local osc down to 1600 KC and then an ECH35 (a bit like a 6K8) down to 465 KC. There are two 6K7G IF amps with very nice dual crystal filters and switched selectivity from 8 Kc down to 300 Hz (depending on the model) which combines IF crystal filtering and LC audio filtering. There's a BFO and 500 KC crystal calibrator. The output stage is a 6J5 single ended triode, quite modern if you like that sort of thing. The B+ to the oscillators is regulated with a Stabilivolt tapped VR tube that has outputs at 70, 140, 210 and 280 volts. Only the 140 V tap is used. No British boatanchor is complete without some weirdness however; in the CR-150 it's that two sections of the very nice tuning gang are in the plate circuits of the RF amps and thus have B+ on the stator plates - a potential treat for those who don't read the manual carefully. It was clean when I got it but lacked the table top cabinet and power supply. Being what it is, all the notorious TCC (? Terrible Capacitor Company) capacitors had to be replaced. They were universally leaky with the exception of the 25 mfd output cathode bypass which was date stamped 1950 and was in perfect condition - go figure. A lot of the old carbon resistors were way out of range and had to go as well. I fired it up with a hack into my homebrew HRO power supply and it seemed to come to life pretty well. I thought it was nice and quiet and I was able to listen to the local BBC and English language NHK broadcasts at adequate volume and I was pretty happy. One thing that bugged me though was that the calibrator didn't seem to work and the AVC voltage was a bit low. The calibrator was oscillating OK and on frequency but I just couldn't hear it. The calibrator is fed to the input of the 2nd RF stage, and screen voltage is removed from the first RF amp when the cal is on. After a lot of stuffing around, in desperation I finally tried replacing the RF amp tubes and that had a spectacular effect. It turned out the 2nd RF amp tube was completely dead! Now the cal works nicely and the radio just ROARS. This is one hot receiver, it could still pick up short wave broadcasts with a dud RF amp!! The next step is to touch up the alignment. The manual says not to align the IF filters unless you are "a qualified engineer with special laboratory equipment". These days most hams have access to high quality test gear that would only have been available in laboratories 60 years ago. I would love to sweep the IF properly but they didn't put the instructions in the manual, probably to deter people from attempting it :-( The radio still needs a bit of work and I need to make up a dedicated PSU but it's looking like a real gem! 73 Morris VK3DOC ------------------------------ To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: [ARC5] Lazy Man's Way to Fix Black Wrinkle Date: Sun, 15 Aug 2010 09:23:56 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 From: wa1kbq@aol.com Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="--------MB_8CD0A943F56A79E_1230_3980F_webmail-m041.sysops.aol.com" Message-Id: <8CD0A943F4F837B-1230-186C3@webmail-m041.sysops.aol.com> ----------MB_8CD0A943F56A79E_1230_3980F_webmail-m041.sysops.aol.com Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" MESSAGE has been TRUNCATED -----Original Message----- From: WA5CAB@cs.com To: Old Tube Radios Sent: Fri, Aug 13, 2010 12:22 pm Subject: Re: [ARC5] Lazy Man's Way to Fix Black Wrinkle * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ---REMAINDER OF MESSAGE TRUNCATED--- * This post contains a forbidden message format * (such as an attached file, a v-card, HTML formatting) * Mail Lists at theporch.com only accept PLAIN TEXT * If your postings display this message your mail program * is not set to send PLAIN TEXT ONLY and needs adjusting * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ----------MB_8CD0A943F56A79E_1230_3980F_webmail-m041.sysops.aol.com Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ---REMAINDER OF MESSAGE TRUNCATED--- * * This post contains a forbidden message format * * (such as an attached file, a v-card, HTML formatting) * * Mail Lists at theporch.com only accept PLAIN TEXT * * If your postings display this message your mail program * * is not set to send PLAIN TEXT ONLY and needs adjusting * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ----------MB_8CD0A943F56A79E_1230_3980F_webmail-m041.sysops.aol.com-- ------------------------------ To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: [ARC5] Lazy Man's Way to Fix Black Wrinkle Date: Sun, 15 Aug 2010 09:55:11 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 From: wa1kbq@aol.com Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="--------MB_8CD0A989CC595AD_1230_3A2DE_webmail-m041.sysops.aol.com" Message-Id: <8CD0A989CB74D67-1230-18B05@webmail-m041.sysops.aol.com> ----------MB_8CD0A989CC595AD_1230_3A2DE_webmail-m041.sysops.aol.com Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" I've tried about everything there is out there over the years and settled= on the procedure outlined below. It's the schematic for a Westinghouse RPM 5020. Well.. I know this may not completely apply as a BA but it is almost there. Like a Zenith TO from the 60s, this set is a big transistor multiband with one of the best audio responses you can imagine, excellent SW reception and one of the early radios to include VHF. If anyone has Len Buckwalter's book, The ABC of Shortwave listening, the radio is featured there. I already searched through the sand state groups and no luck. Maybe, like me, someone here liked the radio and has a manual with schematic. My recent encounter an NC 109 problem resulted in the first time I have ever found a more modern IF transformer really bad. The problem could be traced to the capacitors embedded and molded into the base. Even these micas seem to be failing already. In this case I decided to use a NOS replacement but the transformer can be fixed as long as the capacitor can be removed. In this case the molded base came apart in my hands. With the replacement the NC109 returned to its good old self. Something to check when intermitten problems arise that are difficult to trace.
