The system has recorded your address as modena@sunsite.unc.edu and in order for your messages to get posted (if the list accepts postings), you will have to send them from this address, unless the list does not require subscription for posting. If a message is ever rejected, please contact the list's owner: listown@jackatak.theporch.com For information on this service and how to use it, send the following request in the body of a mail message to listproc@theporch.com: HELP All requests should be addressed to listproc@theporch.com. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WELCOME TO THE BOATANCHORS MAILING LIST 1. This mailing list is devoted to the discussion of vintage communications equipment, which we fondly refer to as "Boatanchors" and closely related subject. The central theme is vintage amateur radio equipment using vacuum tube (firebottle) technology, but we have been known to drift into discussions of such things as entertainment boatanchors, antennas, telegraph keys, classic electronic/radio books and radio history. 2. You will find the accumulated wisdom available here to be an invaluable resource if you have questions about vintage radio operation, maintenance, restoration, or history. If you have knowledge or expertise that can help answer a question, please post your responses. You may think that the answer to a specific question is best directed to the poster via direct e-mail. Sometimes, that is the best approach. But, some of the better threads on this list have been generated by a single question. So, when in doubt, post the response to the group. 3. As in most polite societies, we deplore the use of electronic violence such as flames, personal attacks, and long- winded diatribes of any type. Please be courteous and polite. We think this mailing list has one of the highest signal-to-noise ratios on the internet and we want to keep it that way! 4. For sale notices are welcome, if the items are boatanchors and related equipment. Please do the haggling via private e-mail or other means. 5. Since these postings are archived by at least two sites, we ask that you limit the size of your responses, where possible. In particular, we dislike the wholesale inclusion of a previously posted message when you use the reply function. Please edit the original posting to delete the parts that are not needed to understand your response. That effort will reduce bandwidth and storage requirements which will make all subscribers much happier! 6. This is the third incarnation of the Boatanchors mailing list. The first listowner was Jim Lockwood, KM6NK. When Jim lost his internet access, the reins were transferred to Paul Prescott, N1AAC. The current listowner is Jack GF Hill, W4PPT. One of the more interesting things about this list is the fact that most of the original subscribers are still around. 7. The listowner is happy to provide this service via a list processor that supports subscribe, unsubscribe, and address change functions via correctly formatted messages. Problems that cannot be resolved by sending e-mail to the list processor should be addressed to: listown@jackatak.theporch.com Please *do not* submit such administrative messages to the whole list! Such messages only irritate the readers. If you remember only one thing from this message, remember that a "Help" message to the list processor (listproc@theporch.com) will get you instructions on how to unsubscribe or change your address. 8. Hot Spare Boatanchors List In order to reduce the affect of host outages at the main list server site such as we all experienced in Fall '94, a "hot spare" list server is set up at boatanchors@beacons.cts.com. It will normally be disabled, but in case of an outage at theporch.com a message will be sent to the list indicating the spare list address is to be used for list postings until the problem is resolved. The subscription list will be mirrored at the spare site so that the disruption of list traffic will be minimal. The spare site will not be activated unless the outage persists for more than a day. In case of an extended outage of the main list site, subscribe/unsubscribe requests can be handled by the spare site since it runs the same software as the main site. Use the address listproc@beacons.cts.com, list name BOATANCHORS, for such requests. 9. This subscription is available in two formats. The first, also the default is to have each posting to the list mailed to you seperately. If you want it like that, you don't have to do anything. The second option is to receive digests which means the messages are collected and mailed out to you only if it exceeds a length limit or a time limit (one day). To change to the digest form, sent email to listproc@theporch.com with the following: set boatanchors mail digest If you want to temporarly suspend receiving the list but don't want to sign off the list, you can set your mail to postpone by sending email to listproc@theporch.com with the following in the body of the mail: set boatanchors mail postpone This will stay in effect until you change your mail status to one of: ack noack or digest (ack the default reflects your posting to the list back to you) 10. Getting the FAQ If you want to read the FAQ for the boatanchors mailing list please send email to listproc@theporch.com with the following content: get boatanchors FAQ You will receive this via email in a short while. 11. Again, welcome to Boatanchors!
