Abstract: PARSE is a FORTRAN subroutine which makes specification
of files used in a program easy, and requires a minimum
of operator input. When used with a FORTRAN applications
program, PARSE minimizes the amount of typing necessary
to specify files by providing default values whenever
they are not supplied at run-time. Both default device
specifications and extensions may be handled. Once a
"root" filespec has been created by PARSE, further
filespecs can be created without any user action by
means of successive calls to PARSE.
 
The program TSTPAR demonstrates the use of PARSE, and
also provides extensive documentation on the proper use
of the subroutine. The subroutine is used with RT-11
FORTRAN IV codes, and calls several RT-11 SYSLIB
routines.
 
An article on the use of the code may be found in the
magazine SEXTANT, in the Summer, 1983, edition. This
version of PARSE has more functionality than the one
included on the DECUS Symposium tape No. 11-SP-53;
previous versions are upward compatible with the new
one.
