8:30am-5:30pm: News Division CE Course: Computer-Assisted Reporting for News Librarians

Intermediate Level, Comp: 1.6
This course will include examples of stories in which CAR techniques have been successfully incorporated and review ways to include statistical analysis in newsstories. Demonstrations of Excel, Access, and FoxPro programs as CAR tools will follow, and a Census Bureau representative will discuss the analysis of population data.

HTML? XML? Join the News Division’s Technology Spotlight as we focus on new technologies, their potential applications in a news environment, and impact on news archiving and research methods and systems.

Panel will offer library and journalism perspectives on ethics and examine changes inethical issues and concerns which have come with the explosion of information available on the Internet. A survey of ethics guide lines among News Division members will be discussed.

With campaigning for the Presidential election in full swing (along with news research)this is a great time to think about the tools and expertise we’ll need. Members of the panel will present information on key political research databases and print sources and discuss strategies for political research.

Philadelphia’s Down Town Club will be host to the annual News Division Awards Banquet and it should be another stellar event in this historic building. The Club was founded in 1897, then merged with the Ledger Club in 1929 and relocated to the Public Ledger Building at 6th and Chestnut Street. Located in Philadelphia’s Historic District, it overlooks Independence Hall and the Delaware River. Join your colleagues for cocktails at 6 p.m. followed by the Awards ceremony and banquet at 7 p.m.

12:00pm-1:15pm: Freedom Forum’s News Division Luncheon

The Freedom Forum continues its series of international programs highlighting the challenges and triumphs of journalists and information professionals working in developing countries with "Free Speech on Trial:  Zimbabwe."  Mark Chavunduka, editor of Zimbabwe Standard and Nieman Fellow at Harvard will speak about his imprisonment and upcoming trial for publishing stories about a government coup.

1:30pm-2:45pm: News Content on the Web

More news organizations than ever are making their news content available over the Internet. But what happens to this content? Is anyone archiving web content or is it lost forever? This panel will look into what different organizations are doing to save web content and discuss the technical and financial obstacles.

3:00pm-4:15pm: Vendor Update

News research and archiving vendors will offer updates on product development and upcoming enhancements to existing services. Time for questions from the audience follows.

Recruiting great people is one of the most important things we do as managers but finding those people can sometimes be difficult. Many research centers are providing end-user access to sophisticated online tools in their news organizations. This panel will examine products being rolled out in newsroom environments and look into some of the hurdles and complicated management issues that area part of this equation: identifying end-users, empowering users, training and financial challenges.

9:00am-4:30pm: News Division Field Trip to Winterthur Museum and Longwood Gardens

A visit to Winterthur, the Henry du Pont Estate and Gardens, in the beautiful Brandywine Valley, will include a docent-led tour of the museum’s collection of decorative arts spanning 200 years. Following time to explore the grounds we will depart for a visit to Longwood Gardens and explore some of the 20 indoor gardens and 1000 acres of grounds, a true delight for your senses. Two groups will alternate schedules: one visiting Winterthur in the morning and Longwood in the afternoon, the other group will do the reverse. A casual luncheon for both groups will be included at Winterthur.
