The Israeli State

On 27 November 1947, UN Resolution 181, defined the outline of a settlement in Palestine creating both a Jewish and a Palestinian homeland. The 1947 UN Partition divided the area into thr ee entities: a Jewish state, an Arab state, and an international zone around Jerusalem. The Jewish people living in this area of Palestine issued a declaration of statehood on 14 May 1948. Within 24 hours , the Arab states issued their response. And in a coordinated attack, the states of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq invaded the new state of Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces repulsed these attacks in fi erce fighting which lasted for some 15 months. In the meantime, the areas set aside in UNRes 181 for the Arab state were absorbed by the invading states.
