Yes, Marillion, Asia, King Crimson, etc.
Discussion of progressive rock; that is, the art rock movement of the
1970's, headed by Yes, Genesis, ELP, Kansas, Gentle Giant, and others.
This music is characterized by strong classical and jazz influences,
lengthy pieces, and attention to compositional details (perhaps
noticeable mainly to trained musicians) rather than catchiness or
marketability. New artists that write compositionally complex music
are also discussed.
There are other definitions for "progressive" music. For one group of
people, it is a synonym for today's "alternative" music.
alt.music.progressive does NOT address this music; see
alt.music.alternative instead. For a second group of people, it means
any music that progresses beyond popular music in some significant
way. alt.music.progressive sometimes addresses this type of music.
The most common argument concerning "progressive rock" occurs when two
people use different definitions of "progressive." One or both of
them start screaming, "the music you like is NOT progressive." These
arguments get nowhere and should be avoided.
Note that alt.music.genesis and alt.music.yes exist for discussions
particular to Genesis and Yes, respectively.
