Another more recent textbook which might be of some help is "Athenaze: An
Introduction to Ancient Greek" (2 volumes), eds. Maurice Balme and Gilbert
Lawall (Oxford University Press, 1991). I used this text when I took Greek
in college, and while at first I was somewhat disconcerted by being asked to
actually READ Greek on the first day of class, later on I much appreciated
the textbook's approach. (Sort of a graded reader with a continuous story
through both volumes.)
