LXX for meaning?

On this topic, don't miss the discussion in:

Moises Silva, *Biblical Words and Their Meaning: An Introduction to Lexical
Semantics*, Grand Rapids: Academie Books/Zondervan, 1983.

Silva carefully discusses when it is (and isn't) safe to assume that a NT word
draws its lexical force from the LXX. Reconstructed from memory, his
conclusion is: when a word is used in the NT in religious contexts similar to
uses in the LXX, the conditions are favorable for a correlative meanings. When
the same words are used in differing contexts, even if both contexts are
religiously charged, the conditions are not as favorable, and the assumption of
correlative meanings cannot be made as safely.

(If you can understand *that*, German should hold no horrors for you.)

Grace and peace,
