Here are a few books on discourse analysis. This is not a well defined
field yet, and so many different things go by the name.
_Discourse analysis_ Gillian Brown and George Yule, Cambridge Textbooks
in Linguistis, Cambridge University Press, 1983 (reprinted 1993). This
is a good general introduction.
_Approaches de Discourse_ Deborah Schiffrin, Blackwell Publishers,
1994. Just as the title suggests, she discribes a number of different
approaches, includes exercises, etc.
_Discourse Analysis_ Michael Stubbs, University of Chicago Press, 1983.
Another good introduction, but stresses oral language as opposed to
written.
_Information Structure and Sentence Form: topic, focus and the mental
representations of discourse referents _ Knud Lambrecht. Cambridge
Studies in Linguistics, Cambridge University Press, 1994. Excellent
book.
_Relevance Relations in Discourse: a study with special reference to
Sissala_ Regina Blass, Cambridge Studies in Linguistics, Cambridge
University Press, 1990. Not an easy read, especially if you are not
used to reading data in languages you never heard of before. Probably
best left for later. It is based on Sperber and Wilson's Relevance
Theory, and you should probably read that first.
