While you're at it, take a look at Krister Standahl, "Paul and the
Introspective Conscience of the West." You can find this article reprinted
in a book by the title, _Paul among Jews and Gentiles_ by the same author.
Stendahl does an admirable job of exposing the differences between a
first-century understanding of identity and the modern notion of an
introspective self.
