Roma 1:17 (GNT) dikaiosunh gar qeou en autw apokaluptetai ek pistews eis
pistin, kaqws gegraptai: ho de dikaios ek pistews zhsetai.

What a curious phrase! What does this "ek X+gen eis X+acc" mean? It seems
parallel to 2 Cor 2:16, which I don't understand either:

2Cor 2:16 (GNT) ois men osmh ek qanatou eis qanaton, ois de osmh ek zwhs eis
zwhn. kai pros tauta tis ikanos;

So let's try some phrases I do understand. There are several, but I don't
find them helpful. It seems parallel to "from one house to another" in Luke
10:7 and "from Jerusalem to Galilee" in John 4:47:

Luke 10:7 (GNT) en auth de th oikia menete esqiontes kai pinontes ta par
autwn: axios gar o ergaths tou misqou autou. mh metabainete ex oikias eis
oikian.

John 4:47 (GNT) houtos akousas hoti Ihsous hkei ek ths Ioudaias eis thn
Galilaian aphlqen pros auton kai hrwta ina katabh kai iashtai autou ton
uion, hmellen gar apoqnhskein.

But surely we won't be moving from one faith to another. And we aren't
moving "from death to life", as in John 5:24, but staying in faith.

John 5:24 (GNT) Amhn amhn legw umin oti ho ton logon mou akouwn kai pisteuwn
tw pemyanti me ecei zwhn aiwnion kai eis krisin ouk ercetai, alla
metabebhken ek tou qanatou eis thn zwhn.

I think it is time to stop simmering in my own juices and see if somebody
out there can help me understand this!

Jonathan
