It has graciously been brought to my attention that our hopes of putting
Machen online may be in violation of copyright laws. We had thought the
laws were in our favor.

Final confirmation, at least from my perspective, came from a reading of
the law as found at:

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/

Under "Duration of copyright" section it says:

"(b) Copyrights in Their Renewal Term ... before Jan 1, 1978"
(such as Machen is - in 1951) "The duration of any copyright, the renewal
term of which is subsisting at any time between Dec 31, 1976 and Dec 31,
1977, inclusive, ...is extended to endure for a term of seventy-five
years from the date copyright was originally secured."

Since the copyright date is 1923, then the renewal term does not expire
until Dec. 31, 1998. Thus, in accordance with copyright laws, our plans
to put Machen online have been aborted.

Those of you planning on taking the class should avail yourselves of the
book by Sept 1.
