CALL FOR PAPERSū1998 North Carolina Classics Graduate Colloquium

Finem egressi legemque priorum: Oddities and Vulgarities in the Ancient
World
(Sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke
University)
28-29 March 1998, Chapel Hill, NC

In classical studies, we often encounter evidence that challenges our
fundamental assumptions about the ancient world. The ancients, too,
faced challenges to their views and experiences of their world. It is in
dealing with such evidence that the ancients defined their world, and we
redefine our field. This colloquium requests papers that call into
question modern or ancient preconceptions about the ordinary and
familiar in the ancient world. Topics might come from, but are not
limited to, the following fields:

textual criticism;
literature (language, meter, or genre);
custom, ritual, and religion;
politics, law, and governance;
sources and historiography; and
art, architecture, and archaeology.

Please submit a 250-350 word abstract by mail, email, or fax no later
than 10 January 1998. Do not include your name or affiliation on the
abstract. Instead, please submit with your abstract a 3x5 index card
with your name, address, phone number, email address, institution
affiliation, and paper title. (If you are submitting by email, simply
send this information in a separate message.) Participants will be
notified by mail or email by 31 January 1998. We are not strictly
limiting the length of presentations, but please indicate on your index
card how long you would like to speak.
