Sorry for the longish post re textual criticism on B-Greek, but Clayton's
question seemed to call for a bit of detail for a response to be useful, and
perhaps others have had similar questions. And after all, it is in the
variant readings of the NT manuscript tradition that we find some of the
more interesting grammatical questions or issues--and not infrequently, in
the form of some variant readings, clues as to how Greek scribes interpreted
or rendered a difficult or awkward construction about which we now puzzle.

To clarify once more my over-brief caution on Textual Criticism:
There is no problem whatever in discussing textcritical questions about
passages in the GNT, nor in asking/answering questions about helps,
bibliography, editions, etc.
The problem at the time I issued my caution was about theories of the
history of the text, which often, and on this List, and on the
TextualCriticism List, and elsewhere, tend to degenerate into arguments
about OUR theology, and God's care for the Text, and the evils of Westcott
and Hort, etc., etc. For the same reason, we need to abstain from
arguments about authorship of NT documents. A great diversity of
theological viewpoints are managing to co-exist peacefully on our List--
thanks again to the wisdom of our ListOwner, David John Marotta.
But the sort of questions Clay raises, and the exceptional help offered by
real text critics like Mike Holmes, are more than welcome, and do us all
good. (Clay is even beginning to make me wonder about Codex Beza once
more!)
