In my opinion the order of words in John 1 has been determined by a literary pattern and not by grammar. Note: In beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and God was the word. I doubt if that pattern can be duplicated in acceptable English. I believe that the best translation for the last phrase is: and the word was God. Calvin L.
