The second volume of Moulton's grammar, _Accidence and Word-Formation_,
has a considerable section on vowels which includes information on such
diachronic themes as _ablaut_, itacism, and other factors in vowel, and sound
change (See pp. 64-97).
Of course, the aparatus of the Nestle 26th or 27th ed. has all the
information to indicate whether alternation of the sounds in question is
probable. The problem is to find passages significant to the question. One
possible source for the latter is an analytic lexicon, by J. Stegenga, based
on the Textus Receptus, which gives an alphabetically arranged list of
variants between the TR and the eclectic editions in an appendix (_The
Greek-English Analytical Concordance of the Greek-English New Testament_ [Jack
son, Miss.: Hellenes-English Foundation, 1975]). I'm not certain, however,
that the English edition is still in print.
