I replied to your personal address off-list, but I guess it didn't go through.
I would think that texts like Matt 28:19 which contain the "building blocks" for
trinitarian concepts influenced the Church Fathers who leaned in that direction,
but I doubt that any one text caused them to create the Johannine Comma. For
further info on these texts in the NT, see J. L. Garrett's _Christian Theology:
Biblical, Historical, Systematic_ [I'm uncertain about the exact title], vol. 1.

Al, the prophecy is likely the same one mentioned in 4:14 - the charisma
was given to Timothy DIA PROFHTEIS with the laying on of hands.
Does 4:14 mean that prophecy occurs as they laid hands on Timothy, or did
the prophecy order them to lay hands on Timothy, along the lines
of Acts 13:2? Either way seems a possible reading.
I'm not sure what you mean by finding a way to translate the text so that
it "doesn't have this problem" - which problem, specifically?
By the way, I have a paper on the role of Christian prophecy in

You are right that Dana & Mantey do not treat substantives that are used
with prepositions, thus they have no categories for some functions which
are found in the NT only with prepositions. This is one improvement that
Brooks & Winbery made over Dana & Mantey. We also have (pp. 66-67) a
comprehensive list of prepositions with the categories with which they
appear in the NT. This makes it easy to find any function that occurs in
the NT with any preposition, IOHO.

I would call this a nominative used in apposition to the pronoun EGW (B&W, p.7).

My practice is simply to note that the pronoun is attracted to the case of
its antecedent. Its function is means, "by which."

The reason that this does not fit neatly into any D&M categories is because
they do not deal with functions found only with prepositions. B&W have a
category called, for lack of a better term, "Genitive of attendant
circumstances" found only with the preposition META. The description
reads,"A substantive in the genitive with META may indicate emotional
reactions or phenomena which accompany the action of the verb."

Check L&S (I do not have mine at home) for ANEXOMAI. I think that it can
take its object in the genitive. Thus ALLHLWN would be a gen. of root idea
used with certain verbs. "Hold one another in love." (B&W p. 20). It has
no nominative form or singular forms. It does occur in the dative and
accusative plural in the NT and other Greek literature.

still makes all his overseas calls on the weekends, I guess cause the long
distance rates are cheaper then.
He only likes to take new members from referrals from satisfied existing
members and he does virtually no advertising. When I got set-up, they had
a 2-3 week waiting list for new members to be called back so that they
could join up. (Once you are an existing member, they help you immediately
when you call. ) I think they are able to get back to prospective new
members the same day or within a few days now, as they have increased
their staff. I am not sure about this.........but if you email the above

David M. Schaps wrote about Gn 1 in "Re: Accuracy in Translation":
"It misses the fact that the three first letters of the first word are
themselves the second word. It misses the distinction between the
verb actually used, "bara" ("created") and the more common verb
"asa" ("made") -- the difference usually being explained as being
one between making something out of nothing (bara) and something
out of something else (asa)."
It is my impression that the ancients, and particularly the Greeks,
didn't think anything came from nothing, i.e. no creation ex nihilo.
In Genesis for example, the wind and the waters, at least, seem to
pre-exist the creation. Many ancient creation myths seem to create
the cosmos from the body of a god, as Marduk from Tiamat.
Is this supposed use of bara to mean creation from nothing limited
to divine contexts ?
Does anyone have textual references supporting or contradicting the
notion of creation from nothing in ancient Hebrew (or other Middle
Eastern) sources ?
Is it Christian thought that Jesus created the world from nothing ?
(Jn 1:1) If so, what would be the textual evidence for this position?
