John 4:24

Fellow Greekers,

In John 4:24, we find the following construction:

...worshippers must worship him EN spirit KAI truth

The NIV renders it IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH, but the second
EN is not in the Greek.

Am I write to assume that the dative phrase "EN spirit KAI truth"
indicates the WAY God must be worshipped? ie. spiritually and
truthfully. (can't remember the technical term for this kind of dative
- I don't have my grammar books handy.)

...worshippers must worship him spiritually and truthfully

or another possibility is that it could indicate influence or control:

...worshippers must worship him under the influence of the Spirit and
   truth.

but I think this is stretching it.

Any comments?

cheers,
Andrew
