I realise this is getting beyond the topic of B-Greek, but it will shine
a little light on the Hebrew or Aramaic oath formula that seems to be
preserved in the Greek of Mark 8:12. While the person said the oath
formula, they may well have gestured something with their hands, such as
a slitting of the neck. This would account for the fact that the oath
appears so strange to us just reading it. The visual action of the oath
was probably just as important as the words.
