Help! I am probably reading something wrong here, but the way I am reading
this passage right now does not seem to agree with the translations I'm
comparing it to. Verse 3 starts out with the relative pronoun hWN, which
seems to refer back to THN EN FOBWi hAGNHN ANASTROFHN hUMWN, "your
in-reverence pure manner-of-life". I'm not sure if this is reverence to God
or to the husband in this context - regardless, this manner of life does
not consist of external adornment, but of the "hidden man of the heart". As
I am reading it right now, it seems not to say that women should not wear
gold or braid their hair, but that they should not use this as the way of
winning their husbands over; rather, the witness of their gentle and quiet
spirit, the "inner man of hte heart", this is the witness which will win
their husbands over if they are disobedient to the word.
Is this a legitimate reading?
